What payment gateway do you use with WHMCS, and what sucks about it?

Hey all,

Kinda new to this space. Working on a WHMCS gateway module and trying to learn what hosts actually deal with on the payments side.

What's your setup, and what annoys you about it? Fees, freezes, chargebacks, failed renewals, whatever comes to mind.

Horror stories welcome. Thank you in advance!

For providers and people here WHMCS itself worries more...

Interesting kind of market research 🧐

But considering that WHMCS seems to be dead soon probably the wrong focus.

Getting invested into building payment modules for WHMCS in 2026 is like starting a horse shoe and carriage company in 1910.

Might want to consider making a new WHMCS instead.

    Why dead soon?

The prices are consistently going up ~15% each year and its getting easier than ever to vibe code a functional replacement.

I'll use whmcs just as a testing bed for the payment processing side of the business initially. I am not tied to that software (since i own the payment processing itself, not just the plugin).

Also do you think established providers that have all their systems integrated with whmcs will risk "vibecoding" a new solution and transitioning to it? Is that something that is actually happening in a measurable scale or only small businesses do that? thank you

haha i am not that familiar with this space to even attempt that. but regardless of that i own the payment processing itself so i am not tied to whmcs. If you are a provider do you perhaps have any feedback regarding your exp with payment gateways in this space? anything shared would be useful to me.

    Thank you!

Only small businesses are doing that, and it often ends up with them running buggy, insecure panels. The only saving grace is that WHMCS (and management dashboards like Virtualizor) are not that much better...

people really hate whmcs it seems. Are the margins that low that a 15% increase affects profitability? whats the lore?

I would rather look for small niches in regard to payment gateways, e.g. at the moment neither the standard (dynamic payments) stripe module nor competitors support the new Stripe Managed Payments (MoR) mode.

And I haven't seen a really fully usable and trustworthy paddle or fastspring module at the moment (both also MoR).

But the thing is (if we are talking trustworthy): what have you done before, how would you shine on the trustworthiness question?

i see thank you. so most likely the "big boys" are going to just tank the price increases. Can't see an easy way out of such an established system for them tbh, they are kinda trapped

Thank you for the feedback. I was wondering that myself, but do people in this space actually want to use a MoR? From the limited things i've seen most don't but please correct me if i am wrong or you personally need it.

Regarding trustworthiness, i have people processing 5-10k per day without an issue and the psp i am co-oping with has partnerships with clickfunnels and other big players + i process money through them myself. Over 30k the past 8 months and never had an issue

Or they write their own because they have the money to hire actual developers.

Those are all "small businesses" in the grand scheme of things. They are on LET after all. But GCP or AWS or DO are not going to be using WHMCS or vibe coding their own solution.

I think it's not so much that providers are so impacted by the cost increase that they can't absorb it, it's just annual greed. The price increases every year for a software that doesn't improve by any measurable metric. 15% increase, for what? Bugs that were there three years ago are still there. Features requested still do not exist. They got in the habit of charging more every year because, what are you going to do? Make your own panel? Well, that thought process worked for a long time but doesn't work so much now.

Ou George, there is no problem that can't be solved by people them-selves in LLM age. If something sucks - they ask codex to fix that.

Ok i see so its more a matter of principle. A can't but notice that someone in whmcs corproate is a fun of warren buffett and they took the pricing power principle to heart. They will keep raising the pricing each year until they start losing business in a measurable way.

So.. result of this discussion is, small providers will vibe code something, bigger providers will better vibe code something, and then there are like 10 providers who pay WHMCS to not do anything 😅

True but I see more and more "payment gateways" (ones doing crypto) replicate cryptomus/heleket ticket spam strategy, and it annoys me a lot.

I really cannot understand why anyone thinks this is a good idea. It immediately makes me think of how to blanket ban anything remotely touching their company. Sending in normal info/contact email? Annoying, but whatever. They can slot in-between the carpet cleaning offers and janitorial services ones. However, making accounts and opening support tickets (sometimes on "high/emergency") is a surefire way to receiving extra attention, in a bad way.

I'd be curious to see a screenshot of the kind of ticket spam they send.
