Looking for cheap "exotic" VPSes
I'm building a Reticulum* network with public nodes, so I'm looking for very low cost VPS providers. $1-3 USD per month, payable per year. I know this is on the really low end, but luckily I also have low requirements.
Minimum requirements
1 vCPU
512 MB RAM
5 GB Disk
400 GB Monthly BW Transfer
Uplink dedicated 10MBit
Of course, anything better than this is.. better, especially uplink and bandwidth. But these are the bare minimums for me to even consider the VPS. The bandwidth can technically be lower as my tests from a one month period uses about 100GB, but I will only accept less bandwidth for really exotic locations on a case by case issue.
I have VPSes in: Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, US (NY), US (LA), Ecuador, Thailand. And am looking mainly for providers with data centers in Africa, Asia and Oceania. But others may be interesting depending on price.
Any recomendations or small providers that could fill these needs?
I have already checked offers from Low-End-Box and have purchased serveral of them.
*Reticulum is a decentralized cryptography-based networking stack designed for resilient, decentralized communication. It works over virtually any medium - LoRa radio, TCP/IP, I2P, serial links, etc. It is built for low bandwidth use, requiring as little as 2-3 Kbps to create connections. It is not useful to browse the regular internet, but it can serve small text based "web" pages inside the network. Common uses are LoRa based sensor networks, for small data transfers.
Comments
@HostDoc for Nigeria. Greencloud (whatever their handle, can never memorize it) for Asia and @onidel @oloke for Oceania but this is not cheap (somewhat stable, however). Alternatively, SMC for Oceania - https://store.soutarmc.com/index.php?rp=/login
@NDTN
@Zappie
@trewq
Paging @forest for esoteric knowledge
Thank you @JohnFilch123 and @rpqu for the feedback.
I have now a VPS from soutarmc in Sydney for $15 per year which was even cheaper than the advertised $2.50 per month.
Also thanks to @bbmmsvr4u for the offer in Malaysia. I now have a VPS there too.
I had forgotten about @Zappie Zappie Host, have dealt with them before and they are great. Just a tad too expensive and low bandwidth for me to bounce on their offers, but I will consider them.
I can't find any website for @HostDoc but did find them on facebook. So I will check them out.
Thanks everyone!
Thank you!

HK, TW, PH, JP, KR, ID, AE, SG, VN, TH, IN
30Mbps port, 1Tb transfer
$ 33.00/year
https://www.surfercloud.com/promos/vpsoffer#activity
30Mbps port, 200Gb out/unl. in
$ 9.9/year
https://www.surfercloud.com/promos/ulighthost
One thing to note is that a lot of these prices are not recurring. Like the $9.9/yr renews at $48/yr.
33$/y is kinda expensive even for these locations.
Maybe PH or TH but the others nah.
Hi,
Sounds like a cool use-case. Is it possible to host a public Reticulum node nowadays?
How the nodes are discovered or are they listed somewhere?
Yes, newer versions of reticulum have a built in optional public announce feature. https://rmap.world is a live map of the "test" network. Activating the anounce function makes the nodes automatically show up on the page. It's also possible to specify longitude and latitude to specify exactly where the node is located.
Please DM me if you are interested in hosting one or two nodes at onidel (see our datacenter locations).
For this use-case, we can offer you a custom discount on our standard plans, since from what I understand hosting a public node is non-profit.
I can attest to:
South Africa: Maxko Hosting
Serbia: Maxko Hosting
Kosovo: RS Computers, AVS ISP
Macedonia: AVS ISP
Albania: AVS ISP
Hong Kong: Aluy, Cloudblast
Laos: No Ack Hosting (only 4 Mbps international, though)
Chile: Infofractal
Bangladesh: MetroVPS
Certainly @zGato will know of more.
Some particularly exotic ones tested by https://blog.ahu.moe/, so this aren't just taken from an aggregator but actually tested, although the list may be outdated and I haven't personally tested them:

Thanks for the mention. FlowVPS has a base 4GB RAM plan which is about double the price the OP is after. Per unit we are there but can't increase overheads.
Thank you for the generous suggestion. And yes, you are correct in this being 100% non-profit.
But thanks to the great people in this thread, I had already found/been offered locations in Sydney, Malaysia, Vietnam and Turkey.
Onidel did come recomended, but I'm not sure that the price can motivate another VPS in this area even with a discount. But I will think about it.
Wow, I see why your expertise was called upon.. And I knew about No Ack Hosting since it's run by a long time friend of mine.
But thank you for the list, I will check them all out and see if I can find a deal.
But I had decieded not to use his Laos site, because, as you say, the 4 Mbps connection. Which isn't VPS specific, but the total bandwidth available. He does have a Thailand site since a while back and recently added a Norway site. And I do use both of those. It's a great price for his Mini VPSes and the "regular" ones have a fair price too.
If anyone wants to check his offers you can find them at https://order.noackhosting.se/ (aff link)
Note that the prices are displayed without VAT, and is added at checkout.
Yes, that's the hardest part. The prices. And there are many good offers out there, but many of them are also higher in prestanda/specs than I need. 4GB of Ram would just be unused. But thank you for your time.
Tell him he's got to learn how to enable host CPU passthrough.
I'll tell him later today. I'm guessing it's just a setting in Proxmox..
I've asked him before but he keeps saying the last time he tried it, it broke everything and he had to spend hours unfucking things. But without certain features enabled, the VPS has both poor performance and very poor security.
But that's a skill issue. It's absolutely possible to enable passthrough without breaking everything.
host CPU passthrough is just setting the VM CPU type to host.... i mean too technical i guess
I mean... doing it yourself is also technically an option
Ok, do you have any suggestions on manuals/information where one could read/learn more about it?
It depends on what problem occurred when it was set that way. All I was told is that it "fucked things up".
If the Proxmox configuration somehow breaks when enabling host passthrough, I'm sure there's an option to manually append a flag to the QEMU command line. In that case, it would be
-cpu host.But the first thing you have to do is shut down the VMs. They don't like their CPU type changing while they're on (or suspended).
Ok, thanks for the tip. I'll see if I can get a better description of the problem when I talk to him and pass on the suggestion.
Just make sure he knows it's not just a performance issue, but a security one as well.
Just asking, is it a country limitation or a datacenter limitation that causes the servers to get stuck under 10 Mbps ( Max ) ?
I would, but I don't technically work for No Ack, I was recomended to say that I was by support since I'm in limbo of being a representative for the company and doing offers, promoting the company. But I don't get paid per say. I do technically get a couple of free VPSes so I'm not exactly a pure customer either.
In short. I don't have access.
In short, a shill
For Laos? It's a price issue. Laos probably doesn't even have 10 Gbps total passing through the whole country.
Well, I guess it falls under the technical definition. But a shill is usually only in it for themselves.
I'm willing to provide help and relay information and questions to make everyone happy.
If you think that is a bad thing, I guess you are free to call me whatever you want.
any deals?
