Bad experience with Contabo - looking to spend about $300-$400 per year on a VPS - US East
Off a recent bad experience with SolidSEOVPS (24 hour down time with no communication - great provider, just maybe not their Tampa location lol), I foolishly gambled on a Contabo box. On paper, it was an amazing deal. For the first couple weeks it also delivered. Contabo has been recommended to me countless times, including by people I trust.
Then, the disk went to absolute trash and their support isn't super responsive. Doh! I did know this was a possibility, but I figured it would come out of the box like that... so after I did preliminary testing, I thought I'd found a great deal.
If something seems too good to be true, probably is. What sucks is the RAM and CPU are fine, but look at the comparison to my even cheaper box from Onidel:

Anyway, I'm already migrated back off that Contabo setup to a temporary refuge on one of my other dozen or so boxes.
Here is my dilemma and maybe some other sysadmin can relate:
I need to upgrade the Onidel box in more ways than one and am shopping for whatever good deal(s) I can find... but not too good, obviously. the Onidel box I have, the OS is too old and the upgrade path has to make two major hops that are a PITA since some essential services have issues with the intermediary step. No big deal, I can bring everything down temporarily off-hours, but I also need a bit more disk and just a bit more RAM as I'm kind of hitting the roof. This presents an opportunity as I'd already dropped a good bit trying to get a slight upgrade on it (foolishly, to Contabo).
If any of you all know some reliable host and deal, please to let me know.
I need: US East, Infinite RAM, half infinite CPU, decent amount of transfer (I do about 200GB a month, nothing outrageous).
NLWRM (Not Long Enough, Wanna Read More)?
Web and telephony stack handling ~35k req/day across 12 domains. Needs as much GB of RAM and as much GB fast NVMe far more than it needs CPU cores.
Current Setup and the Bottleneck:
- Box: Onidel NY KVM, 8 vCPU AMD EPYC 7713, 16 GB RAM, 96 GB NVMe.
- Issue: CPU is asleep (3-5% load) but RAM and Disk are tapped. 51 GB of hot DB data is squeezed into 10 GB of page cache, forcing 3 GB of swap. Disk is 83% full. No room to grow. GCS (Google Cloud Storage) is being used to alleviate some of the space issues there and it isn't "critical", especially as I can just add on disk from Onidel if there were some kind of emergency space jam.
Stack and my Workload:
- Web: Apache 2.4 (mod_php 8.4), reverse proxying backends. (want/need upgrade
- but stuck back two Ubuntus ago as this was just a testing server prior, and my dev server is even less resources lol) - DBs: Postgres 18 (33 GB disk), MariaDB 11.4 (8.3 GB disk), SQLite (1.5 GB), Redis. (need some upgrades here as well)
- Daemons: 14 systemd units. 9 custom microservices (Go, Node, Rust, Python). Most are 10-30 MB RAM, plus a headless Chrome PDF renderer.
- Code: 9 live checkouts (mainly two large PHP monorepos for CRM and Telephony).
I'm obviously running everything now on what is currently has, the 16GB RAM and 96GB NVMe with the old stuff, there are no real issues at all - except that a slight upgrade gives me a nice chance to get all the latest Ubuntu + everything else, hopefully resolve some of the storage crunch, and ideally have a bit more RAM, which is really what I need. Bajillions of RAMs. While I am such the amazing programmer to still pull it off with 16GB of RAM, it really needs 24GB+ or ideally even 32GB+, but in this ecommany ;_; prolly not.
I was trying to wait out Contabo, but support ticket there is 30+ hours, they have barely interacted with it and I don't view the process as having gone very smoothly for a company I just forked about $300 over to a couple of weeks ago if I wanted to go down for 24 hours, I'd have stayed at Solid (who actually, overall, wasn't really that bad, compared to the deals they have + the fact I just had freak accidents kept befalling the location I chose).
I know, I know, before you write it, obviously Contabo wasn't going to deliver what they advertised. I figured the rug pull would be immediate, not some weeks in... and I have low hopes the situation with them will actually be resolved (A) and also that it will likely end up happening again (B), so migrating out now before I really got settled in is easily the best play.
Open to any deals and links! Not interested to wait until Black Friday, plz.

So far, you guys have been great, one of the most reliable hosts and I've had zero issues with performance or up-time the entire time I've been over on that box - I really wanted to stay and try to upgrade to the ONI-5 (I think it is called), but it is just slightly outside of my budget for this
- I'm going to try and put in an argument to hold onto the other Oni box we already have, as we were starting to use it for a secondary testing environment already anyway before all of this happened (our dev box that feeds our main testing environment needs to be swapped out soon as well).

Why not Hetzner? They have US East. On some plans disk latency is not bad, fsync is not super great, but ok. Maybe a bit over your budget for 32GB, but check. On most shared VPS disk sooner or later turns into pumpkin, with Hetzner this lottery is usually more stable, if disk really matters for you.
