The Future of Coding Is... Not Coding?
Microsoft engineer says “typing code is absolutely over”
David Fowler, a Microsoft Distinguished Engineer, says manual code typing is basically over.
Microsoft is already moving toward this with AI agents handling more of the actual coding while developers focus on architecture, reviewing changes, debugging and telling the agents what to do.
I'm curious what everyone here thinks.
Are we actually moving toward a world where developers mostly stop writing code themselves, or is this just another form of higher-level programming?
Personally, I still don't trust AI enough to let it build everything without checking every damn thing it does.

LLM's usually overshoot your objective, they tend to add a lot of shit you didn't ask for, which you have to clean up, otherwise you end up like microslop.
Its a useful tool, especially in planing or getting suggestions to solve problems or solve smol tasks.
You can't trust that shit, to vibe code your app entirely.
None of those public statements are worthy of a discussion, it's all just PR speak to further fuel the AI frenzy... a lot of those long term higher level employees have a large amount of stock and benefit from whatever fuel they can add to the fire.

Things that used to take me a long time to build can now be completed much faster with AI.
I used to make coding mistakes that caused bugs, while AI often produces cleaner and more complete code.
Now, my main role is to guide the overall direction, supervise the build, and ask AI to refine and adjust the details.
AI does not always consider every angle, which may depend on the context it has. Human judgment is still important for direction, review, and final decisions.
AI/LLM is more like a tool then a chatbot for me. could be useful but code can be a hit or miss

I dont think coding is going away.... yeah people who are interested in just getting work done will eventually shift to AI completely. But we also have devs who love coding because they genuinely enjoy the process !!
If I had to draw an example when machines replaced manual labour in the textile industry they did not kill the artisans. It gave rise to new industry around designer dresses and handmade cloths which costs more but people value them more....
I think something similar will happen with coding. AI will take over the people who see coding purely asmeans to end but there will always be people who enjoy the craft itself !!
It's the old artisanal vs industrial contrast again.
Like in pastry, software will have artisanal work relying on human skill and traditional methods on one side and industrial production on the other side. Sometimes a mixture of those two.
Artisanal work done in small batches to produce unique products on one side and industrial work operating at scale and using automation/(AI assembly lines) to produce mass uniformity on the other side.
Artisanal work for those who care and can afford it and industrial for everyone else.
Manual coding will be an art form in the future — written with a fountain pen or brush, then preserved as a collectible. lol

Btw, I tried GPT OSS 120B locally too. When I gave it a long running task, it basically just set a wakeup and stopped. You can really see how lazy its reasoning is.
Coding probably isnt going away, but the amount of actual coding people do might shrink a lot.
There will always be people who enjoy writing code for the sake of it. But for a lot of people, coding was just a tool to build something, and AI is already replacing a big part of that. I think the difference will be between “I enjoy programming” and “I need software.” The second group will probably use AI as much as possible.
Yeah pretty much. AI will handle the ma s-produced stuff, while human made software becomes more of a premium thing. but most users probably won care how it was made as long as it works. so.........
Sorry, I was just busy with some stupid things lol. Btw, have you seen the news about Microsoft building an app less OS ? Basically you just tell the AI what you want and it does it, like that concept one. I also think Microsoft isn’t over collecting customer data.
Meanwhile Facebook is basically getting everything to build or improvetheir models (or just sell), especially with the new Muse models.
Nobody realizes this is the 4th ever hype cycle of managers finally being able to fire all the programmers and just tell the computer what to do. The other 3 failed.
Eventually there will be one smart programmer who knows better what to tell the computer so we can finally get rid off those managers.
Or one smart machine who knows better and finally gets rid of their asshole managers.
On second though, that's most probably the final outcome.
