VPS for a personal VPN

rigorrigor Member
edited August 31 in Requests

Hi!

I'm looking for a VPS to use as a personal VPN. Preferably located within or close proximity to the Nordic countries (~60ms would be fine).

I don't require much for the hardware:

1 core
1GB ram
KVM

Bandwidth is more important at 5-10TB or unmetered as my usage won't be the same every month. Most months I'm probably only using a couple TB at most, while others are 10TB+.

Any recommendations?

My budget is flexible, $10/month or more if needed.

If that's per month @gigahost does 20TB in Norway at ~$6.3/mo

I will set up AmneziaWG and XRay on it, otherwise a public VPN would make more sense.

okey okey, your own public vpn ( serious or not). even with my science lessons, 6tb max.

you can use hostup.se. they’re not a LET provider, but the networking is awesome.
"A private VPN for yourself or your organization is allowed." cuz your organization might need it.

We have London and Frankfurt which will meet your needs of ~60 ms ping to Nordic countries: https://www.ethernetservers.com/vps-hosting

Also, double disk space, bandwidth or CPU cores are available by commenting your order number.

  • Using Shkron for this have it installed on my router. Used to run mullvad but lately it became so unstable that it was a headache having to change servers etcetera

Highly recommend so you will be able to setup own VPN: https://github.com/MHSanaei/3x-ui

We can offer France and UK location, if required?

  • Have you checked ionos/strato?

Hi, Riga is the first location I’d test for Nordic routing, then Gdansk.
The $6/month VPS has 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and 10 GB NVMe. Hostry also has VPS servers with a 1 Gbps unmetered port: https://hostry.com/services/vps/
Check latency from your ISP first: https://help.hostry.com/knowledge-base/looking-glass-test-ips-from-hostry/

    Hey @rigor,

The variable usage is the part that fits well here. There's no monthly allowance at all, no counter and no per-GB overage, so a 2 TB month and a 12 TB month cost exactly the same. Nothing to watch and nothing to top up.

We're in Eygelshoven, NL rather than the Nordics. I won't quote you a latency figure since that depends entirely on where you are and how your ISP routes, so test it yourself before deciding. Test IPv4 is 77.90.60.30 and test IPv6 is 2a09:3f00:3000::cafe, and the looking glass at skrime.eu/network lets you run it from our side back towards you.

For a personal VPN our EPYC configurator at 1 core with 1 GB RAM and 20 GB NVMe in RAID 1 comes to 3.29€/mo, or 2.96€/mo with code LET10, so a fair way under your 10 dollars. TUN/TAP is enabled, and you get 1 IPv4 plus an IPv6 /64.

@SKRIME what about 9.3 in your ToS?

"Soweit nichts anderes (beispielsweise auf der jeweiligen Bestellseite) vereinbart ist, ist ein Traffic von 1000GB im Monat zulässig."

It also says the connection is throttled to 3 Mbit/s after exceeding that allowance :|

Which information is actually correct, and what is the real traffic limit in practice without marketing wording?

We are not located in the Nordic region, but we offer KVM instances in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Multiple instances under the same account in the same region share a regional traffic allocation. For example, three Lite instances provide a combined 6 TB/month outbound allowance.

They dont have looking glass, you've never heard of them because they're a new hosting provider (their asn is AS214639) they are the same company as takehost.biz

Would you recommend them for high-traffic (but no need for high reliability) use-cases?

According to https://bgp.tools/prefix/5.175.178.0/24#connectivity (one of their two Estonian prefixes; the second has identical routing) it seems their single upstream has two upstreams, RETN and Arelion, which isn't too bad.

  • 1 core / 1GB is plenty — WireGuard will happily push near line rate on that.
For your case the specs that actually matter are how traffic is counted and
what happens when you run over.

Two things worth checking before you buy, since your usage swings between
    ~2TB and 10TB+:

    • Whether the host counts inbound + outbound summed, or outbound only. VPN
relay traffic is symmetric — every byte in gets sent back out — so on a
host that bills both directions, a "10TB" plan is really ~5TB of actual
usage through the tunnel. This bites people constantly.
    • Overage behavior: throttle vs hard stop vs per-TB billing. With spiky
months you want a throttle or cheap one-off traffic packs, not a surprise
invoice at the end of a heavy month.

For Nordic proximity on that budget, Hetzner's Finland location is the boring
obvious answer — 20TB included on the cloud plans last I checked, and
Helsinki puts you within ~60ms of most of the Nordics. WireGuard +
      unattended-upgrades and you're done.

Even 512MB would be fine for that.
