What do you guys actually check before buying a VPS?

  My steps:

  • Check how long they have been around (sometimes the company name is new but they just renamed)
  • Check if they have their own ASN and for how long, and look at their upstreams
  • See if their ToS and AUP are written by an LLM, by a translator, contain unnecessary legal gibberish, or is sane
  • Look at the claims on their site and make sure they're reasonable (no "Genuine 1 Gbps unmetered $2/month!!!")
  • Make sure they give information upfront: Looking glass, type of hardware, upstreams, datacenter
  • Check TrustPilot reviews and what people say about them here and on communities like r/vps

  But even then, I'll never commit to a large amount of money. I may jump into a long-term prepaid plan, but not if the annual cost is even near $100. For that, I'd need more assurance.

  I don't buy from a vps hosting provider who registered their company domain just 17 days ago!
