I got my invite July 31st and signed up for a year. I wasn't going to signup due to the pricing but figured since I've been a long time user of thunderbird, I might as well do it and consider it partly as a donation of sorts. Hopefully the pricing goes down or resources goes up otherwise I might not renew next year.

The point is, I trust it as a reliable email service with decent features compared to other paid ones. Not as some anonymous bulletproof service and if that is the use case, don’t be surprised when they hand over your data. Using that as a trust metric makes no sense.

Virtually all providers will do that. That's why you need to know your threat model and use appropriate safety measures (e.g. an anonymity network to connect so it can't tell the feds your IP, or GnuPG so they can't serve you malicious JS one day that sends your password to them in the clear to get around their client-side encryption).

Proton Unlimited is 6599 INR/yr (~69), which comes with paid tier of their VPN too, and it’s even cheaper than the $72 Thundermail charges. Cheaper than Tuta too.
