Least cPanel allows you to upgrade MariaDB past 10.6 unlike DA if you have a lifetime license.

so, how many of your lifetime Cpanel licenses can still use mariadb 11.4?

    oh right...

  • @Fritz said: DirectAdmin is way much better than cPanel IMO.

Gained popularity solely due to pricing the introduction of cPanel's new price structure.

Tbh, I switched to DA due to cP pricing mostly... then I saw some movement in development and decided to keep it, maybe they'll be motivated by cP price increase to work hard and bring DA somewhat to cP level (I said somewhat, not 1:1).

However, their changelog is mostly design shit, fixing issues with current stack... no new thing, no new architecture... nothing new and really useful at all.

So, yeah, I will also dump DA in near future... I am already working on a ISPConfig fork to be a drop-in replacement for DA with a built-in migration from both cP and DA.

A lot of the new tools (not core) are vibe-coded by kimi-k3 as master, whiping GLM-5.2 and k2.6/2.7's asses for the low-level work.

So far it's freaking beautiful and fable5 SecOps reports are getting better :)

I am still deciding between open-sourcing it on git or using as internal stuff only. Will see when the day comes.

    I'll build an integration

The recent changes on DA (e.g. regarding SSL certificates) look like total vibe coding, while the basics have been neglected for years.

    oh right...

If you have old "onetime" cPanel license you can still buy one year of updates for 200$ when you need it. Much cheaper than current licensing. There's no such option with DirectAdmin, all you can do when having lifetime license is moving to monthly payment.

    This is hardly "news".

cPanel and DirectAdmin break all the time now with updates. Sometimes an update is one step forward (yay, a bug fix or vuln patch!) and two steps backwards (woops, we broke IMAP or letsencrypt doesn't work now!)

He's not the only one using AI assistance to build bespoke stacks for his needs. I don't get the AI hate personally... He's competent enough to do more than just say, "Claude build a suite of email hosting tools and make no mistakes" and isn't stupid enough to risk an established business on a rushed migration to an untested in-house stack.

It's a bit different than some random host writing a new VPS panel in two weeks and rushing it into production.

    All that is true, however...

    jar loves drama

    I love drama too

I'm counting on jar to deliver and I hate being disappointed.

Let us have some drama, please!

damnit jar, you really got a rent free in this place

Trying to lure jar back, no doubt.

LET need jar for the biloh bucks.

DA is designed to be a web hosting panel and it's fine. Jar had to hack custom stuff into DA to make it a reasonable email hosting platform.

DA did nothing to support this and the stuff would just break when DA updated. This is what made it "terrible".

Try to compare the File Manager, using cPanel File manager is like using file manager from 2000is.

Compare also the ui for addon domain, auto SSL interface.

He's one of the few I'd trust to use AI right.

Tons of providers here are using it, whether they are saying so or not (it's not a popular thing to admit). The difference between someone like @Jar using it and some 17 year old trying to create some new WHMCS or something. One is competent enough and has the resources available to them to actually use flagship, high end models whereas one is inexperienced, no coding background, and only has $20 so they're forced to use cheap models and don't have the financial means to have it all properly audited or tested for vulnerabilities.

In the same vane we're having CVEs discovered every week from human made code that's sat undetected for a decade or more you have people saying anything made with AI is pure slop and not to be trusted.

So which is it? Good enough to find countless of issues in human written code from developers more talented than anyone here, or it's so bad and dangerous that it cannot be trusted for anything at all?

    I'd say: It depends.

This means I can finally ditch the 2nd entry of passwords in my Bitwarden...Now I have 2x entries: one main site and one for Panel

The answer is simple: AI is much better at finding human-created bugs than creating bug-free code.

Perhaps, but I still think it's a tool and it depends on who is using it before I judge the outcome of it's use too much.

I just know some of the big dogs here are using it quietly, but they get a pass because they already have a history of competence and trust. I'd bundle @jar into that category. He's been doing custom fixes and random DA updates since 2018 by the looks of it: https://github.com/mxroute - So AI isn't his first introduction into seeing code...

So with that, I'll repeat what I said before: I think it depends on the person/organization using it and their history prior to the introduction of useful AI.

It's very good at code review and building templates, but it sucks for "vibe-coding" when it's the creator of the code and the "programmer" is just giving it prompts.

My experience with AI has always been that it's only good as it's user/prompter. Obviously if you're a good dev, then it will be useful. And same goes the other way.

I have not know Jar well enough but I trust @MannDude's judgement so I believe MXRoute is all well.

Still have a BF plan with MXRoute and still loving it with no plan to cancel whatsover.

you have to understand every singal line of the code, and the relations of each function, AI is not always right

so, if you can code the entire program without AI, then AI save you time. if you can not code the entire program without AI, AI can't do it for you ( yes, AI can code something for you, but that is not production level )

Not the same. With cPanel, you can purchase those updates when needed and still retain your lifetime license. With DA, you give up the lifetime license and switch to a monthly one, with no option to revert.
Additionally, that $200 is about 20% of the price of an current annual cPanel Premier license, whereas with DA you pay 50%, even though you already paid for the software when buying the lifetime license.
