[LF] Sponsor/discount: 1-2 10G Epyc boxes for OSS scraping observability project (re: Cara)

Posting from new account, I know how this looks but you are welcome to review evidence below for yourself 😂

As some of you may be aware, Cara (a website explicitly against scraping for AI training) was recently scraped twice and uploaded to Hugging Face. (I was the first and am trying to fix the mess I made)

I am building an open source tool with input from Cara that scans new datasets uploaded to Hugging Face/ModelScope, hashes images with perceptual hashing, and allows artists to get notified when their work appears in publicly-available AI datasets and submit takedown notices. To do this we would need to ingest hundreds of terabytes of data for hashing. (See links for details)

Any hosting providers willing to give offers for:

  • 1-2 dedis, Epyc/similar high core
  • 64GB+ DDR4 ideally
  • Unmetered 10G ingress (egress doesn't matter)
  • ~2TB SSD
  • EU/US region

Happy to share more details if needed :)

What do you look to provide in return ?

  • heft1028heft1028 Member

@xHosts Happy to provide credit on the repo and site + a shoutout on launch post. (Keep in mind this would not be an official product from Cara but rather an open source database they + others could use to scan for works)

These aren't high income jobs for artists at those companies

This is something I want to do for them, also a lot of game devs have been laid off in recent years. I'm not about to ask volunteers creating a community-funded project to do more work or provide financial support for something I'm offering to make and put out as open-source.

You don't think art director and lead are high income at those? Easily $100k+

They are not, I was in engineering at one of those. Game studios also generally pay far worse than pure play engineering. $100k+ is in the "low income" range for the areas most of these places are based out of. You would not pass income qualification to get a 1bedroom at 100k.

Keep in mind this is an open source project that ANYONE can use. I've already cost them thousands in server bills, shall I ask for more money now?

Open your own wallet then. https://buymeacoffee.com/cara.app

Server costs are not the only costs incurred by such a project. I am simply asking for offers/discounts here or if anyone is willing to sponsor. Everything else is already coming out of my own pocket. And yes, I've already donated to Cara.

If you are happy to adjust some of the specs we could maybe help you with some E7 VPS with maybe 2G connections

  • heft1028heft1028 Member

2G is fine but running PDQ on E7 might be a bit rough, will send you a message though!

  • heft1028heft1028 Member

And would be open for regular offers as well! Would appreciate from LET community if you guys have any suggestions for providers :)

  • yoshikiyoshiki Member

You boasted on r/DefendingAIArt about the scraping "only costing ~$10", surely you can boast about doing the right thing with your own money? Maybe ask for sponsors on that subreddit?
