does your vps provider has vps level backup included?

dbadudedbadude Member

I notice more and more providers are including some kind of backup solution into their LET vps dashboards. Some provide it even included for free or cheap less than 7$ per year.
I want to give kudos to Netcup, greencloud, Tierhive for including this standard.

Please comment and with your provider if they also include this service for LET prices.

Dartnode has, either backups or snapshots, I forgot already, lmao, included. Already made use of it because I did fuck up once and it restored it to a mint state. 🤣

Edit: Its a snapup apparently, lmao

All our VPS services have backups included for free, DEV series which is designed for non-production has a monthly backup (retention 1), our standard VPS series has weekly backup and retains for 4 weeks worth. All stored offsite and self-restore available.

We are working on more options in the coming months

You can get a DEV series IPv6 only VPS for £9/yr (ex VAT)

Providers backup is not yours backup.

You don't have a control over it. You have no idea how they implemented this. You have no idea when it works. You have no idea if this even works until you test it and try to restore weekly, monthly... daily?

They got hacked and nuked? Cool, your backup is gone.
You got hacked and someone clicks DELETE VPS (or Destroy for CloudCone clients :D) in your profile? Cool, your backup is gone.
They got DDOS'ed for days and you want to "restore" your service to different provider? Cool, your backup is gone.

    This is not a backup.

also fuck me, I fully expect 99.5% of providers on LET to be not ready to mass restore services after a catastrophic failure. It gonna take days to restore this over network/HDD speeds and bottlenecks. And not many providers have ability to just pack up server or drives and drive them from second location safely.

Technically it's still a backup, but still a single point of failure
