When I opened this thread I did not think about links between LET and providers, but more of a statistical aspect to which the providers with a provider tag would have easy access and be able to select their customers for flash sales if they wish.
If we think about privacy, in the sense that the provider knows which customer is which member of LET, I would point out that we already freely give invoices or order numbers for double bandwidth, double RAM, or other perks.
I do not consider a good idea for LET to share personal info, like email address. I never suggested that and I don't want that. But info which is already visible (number of comments, threads, thanks) and an API would just make things easier for providers if they wish to select customers based on some filters in order to avoid abusers in an age of AI.
I kindly ask @jbiloh to never share any personal information from LET, such as email addresses, age, IP address, or any other private info. This is not the point of this thread.
I do this, to a lot of LET providers T_T
not part of your we, stop trying to speak for all of us.
it's not about let sharing pii, you are asking to give provider_c a link between zed@let and billy bob thornton in provider_c's database at which point ZED'S REAL INFO IS NOW KNOWN TO PROVIDER_C AND HE CAN DO WHATEVER HE LIKES WITH THAT.
does the caps make it clearer? could you just fucking stop trying get everybody on let identified?
No. I am not ashamed of my username on LET, and I am not ashamed if my username on a forum also exists in the database of a provider. I don't consider such connection that important. The provider has my details anyway, LET admins have my details anyway. If some stats connected would bring offers for me, I'm fine with it.
i don't think reframing it as shame changes anything, but nice try shitbird.
I wonder how many vulns does Vanilla have
OK, now you have no logical arguments, and you resort to ad hominem insults. Thank you very much for calling me "shitbird". Unfortunately this conversation between me and you ends here.
Agreed, but this to me has always been confusing why you expect hosts to be okay, 99% of registered businesses there countries laws forbid the ignorance of not requesting basic information for billing. Some get away with it, try there luck etc but for most it’s law.
Now do you as an individual have to get ur right details? no your right do enough to pass a fraud check simple, then both you and host are happy. There not required to fact check your info simply required to ask for it.
Jumping on hosts that want data to give certain deals, be mad about it all you want doesnt affect you or anyone else using fake info, it’s a logical business move to want to reward long-standing users, active users, or maybe known none-abusers to there network, this can be a way to do that.
Vanilla Forums has an API (example: https://lowendtalk.com/api/v2/users/me), but it doesn't have a usable permission for pulling user data and it doesn't support custom permissions as far as I know.
If you look at https://lowendtalk.com/api/v2/users/[yourid], you can see Vanilla only supports add, edit, and delete permissions.
If it did, it would require multiple API requests to acquire the information.
It will therefore require a custom API that pulls the data directly from the database, or a synced database so the API requests from providers don't affect LET.
Secondly, there might be some legal issues because of privacy laws, and I guess a lot of users will go ballistic when they find out.
Just look at all the noise when users were transferred from LET to serververify, and that was to another website within the same company.
I don't think this is going to happen.
It would be just statistics, like thanks received, or number of comments, or member since year X. All this info is already available for any member to see (visible in your profile page). An API would just make it easier for this info to be obtained by providers. Private information should obviously not be shared in any way, shape or form.
I have to correct myself.
Vanilla has the functionality, but it requires you are logged in.

@host_c
What you are asking for sounds like it could easily be used to "fingerprint" users. If even a single provider has your real information that becomes a major issue
The title says "Bots everywhere". I think everyone would like to be able to differentiate humans, but is a social credit system really necessary?
It wouldn't catch the good AI anyways. Just look at DediRock's account
Well, I guess the next problem is stopping the account farm.
The fuck, how did I not see this back then?

LOL. We reached exactly the same conclusion, just about two years later.
+ a completely shitty market and economy....
Reading it now, every single point rings true, and it makes a lot of pieces fall into place for us as well. And this was written back in 2024...
Damn. I wish I’d had the opportunity to meet the guy and exchange experiences. Then again, you never know...
If ramflation didn't happen, I won't be here to remind you
@crunchbits @benha
They are really awesome. They discontinued those promo plans, but they migrated you to their normal plans (better specs than the promo) and let you keep the same discounted price like the promo plans when you reached out expressing your continued interest in their services.
You like wasting time and energy on low sales promotions?
True, but it was a different economic situation back then, and AI was not used for hacking like nowadays. In my opinion low-end providers would need to be more and more careful as time goes by nowadays, due to AI becoming a more powerful toy for abusers too.
that's fine, i don't have a lot of use for anti-privacy gestapo so we don't have much to discuss anyway.
nothing to hide, nothing to fear amirite?
age verification when?
theres still time @host_c
i may be within sword-fighting distance of you soon
Very nice. Don't forget to snap commemorative picture
