  • @SKRIME lines up pretty well, not sure on their VDS pricing but I think they can offer it.

We usually host 3-5 clients on a dedicated server depending on the client's configurations so as not to exceed the server's specifications, that's why we also offer disk space starting with 100gb to 250gb NVMe when others offer starting at 30gb :D

It's guaranteed by pinning a VM to its own cores and not pinning any other VMs to those cores.

I just need two different things:
one storage VPS with unmetered bandwidth, and one high-performance VDS for a Minecraft server.
    That’s why I made two threads 😄

    Thanks for the tag @EvoSteven.

@Cobime32, VDS is exactly what you're after here and we can do it in Eygelshoven, NL.

Comparing directly against the layer7 offer above, our RYZEN 16G as a VDS gives you 4 dedicated cores on AMD RYZEN 9950X, 16 GB DDR5 and 150 GB NVMe in RAID 1 at 24.69€/mo. That's more RAM, more storage and unlimited traffic.

If you don't need four cores, the RYZEN 8G as a VDS is 2 dedicated cores on the 9950X with 8 GB DDR5 and 100 GB NVMe at 14.29€/mo, or 11.69€/mo on the DDR4 5950X with the same RAM and storage. Both sit comfortably in the lower half of your budget.

On the SLA question, straight answer - we don't offer a contractual uptime SLA and don't promise a percentage in writing. What we do is keep the machines online, and there's a public looking glass so you can judge the network yourself rather than take a number on faith.

    Order: skri.me/ryzen9950X
    Looking Glass: skrime.eu/network / AS215365
    Test IPv4: 77.90.60.30 | Test IPv6: 2a09:3f00:3000::cafe

I don't see the term VDS on your website. Is it VDS and ok to run the CPU to its max for extended periods?

  • SKRIMESKRIME Member, Patron Provider

@b00n Correct, the VDS isn't listed on the site - it's ordered through a support ticket or just DM me here, then we set it up for you.

And yes, that's the whole point of the VDS. The cores are dedicated, so you can run them at 100% permanently without us stepping in. That's the difference to our regular KVM servers, which are shared and subject to fair use.

Do you bind to logical cores or physical cores? In other words, is SMT enabled or disabled?

  • SKRIMESKRIME Member, Patron Provider

@b00n The prices in my reply above are the VDS ones - 11.69€/mo for 2 cores with 8 GB and 100 GB on DDR4, 14.29€/mo for the same on DDR5, 24.69€/mo for 4 cores with 16 GB and 150 GB. If you need a different configuration, DM me the specs and I'll quote it.

@forest We don't bind at all, neither to physical nor logical cores, and SMT is enabled. That's deliberate - we need to be able to move VMs between hosts when load shifts, so every customer actually gets what they paid for. Hard pinning takes that away.

Our VDS is a usage policy rather than a pinning setup. The shared-resource clause in our terms is lifted for CPU, so you can sit at 100% permanently without us stepping in. What it doesn't give you is core isolation, so if side-channel exposure between SMT siblings is the concern, you'd want real pinning with SMT off or bare metal instead.

So in other words, it's not a VDS so much as a no-FUP VPS where cores are shared? With a VDS, you usually expect no CPU steal or noisy neighbors, not just that the provider won't suspend you for exceeding some FUP.

Why would hard pinning take that away? All pinning does is stop the scheduler from moving the processes between cores (and thus stops it from putting two vCPUs on the same core). It won't prevent VM migration across nodes.

  • SKRIMESKRIME Member, Patron Provider

@forest The mechanics are exactly as described in my last post, no binding and SMT enabled, so nothing there is hidden from anyone.

On the naming, providers use VDS for all sorts of things and the definitions vary widely. Ours means the CPU fair use clause doesn't apply, which is the limit most people actually run into in practice. If guaranteed isolation and zero steal are the requirement, that's a different product class and not what we're selling.

This has been the norm for a while. I don't get it either. True dedicated cores are very rare nowadays

    E.g. netcup and HostBrr:

labze said: My understanding of dedicated cores is that there are no FUP. You can utilize your cores 100% all the time.

Some providers even have FUP for their "dedicated" cores (lol)

    SolidVPS said:

sustained 100% CPU usage 24/7, even with a dedicated core, is generally not advisable in a shared node environment. Although you are allocated dedicated resources, you still share the same physical server with others.

If your usage exceeds that of our average clients, our team will reach out to discuss an upgrade to a dedicated server to ensure you have the necessary resources.

We (Crunchbits) offer true VDS, you are dedicated a core and both it's threads and you are free to use it 100%. Plans start at $8/m.

Of course, as someone who provides a VDS that doesn't do any sort of black magic AI core balancing and just gives you your core + threads I did dislike having the constant uphill battle when asked to price-match stuff that (as a provider) I blatantly knew wasn't the same dedicated setup.

Ahhh so that's why Crunchbits VDS rarely in stock.
