Small KVM VPS for a Minecraft plugin metrics service (+ self-hosted mail)
Hi all, looking to buy a VPS for a small web app I'm launching. Budget-friendly but I care
more about the network/mail requirements below than about squeezing the lowest price.
What it's for
A self-hosted metrics service for Minecraft plugins (think bStats, but my own). A Laravel
app on the web, a MySQL/MariaDB database, and a lightweight endpoint that game servers ping
every 30 minutes. Starting small, just my own plugins reporting in, so load is light at
first. I'd rather start modest and upgrade than overpay on day one.
I'll also be running my own mail server on it for account verification and password-reset
emails, so the mail requirements below are not optional for me.
Hard requirements (please confirm before I buy)
- KVM virtualisation (not OpenVZ/LXC, I need my own kernel and full control)
Port 25 open for outbound mail — please confirm it's unblocked, or can be unblocked.
This is a dealbreaker for me.Custom rDNS / PTR record that I can set myself (or via a quick ticket)
- A clean IP with no prior spam/blacklist history (I'll be checking on the usual RBLs)
- Full root access
- Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04 available
Specs I'm after
Starting small, so:
2 GB RAM (would take 4 GB if the price is close, since MySQL + PHP-FPM + a mail
server share the box)2 vCPU
- ~25–40 GB SSD/NVMe (metrics data grows slowly; happy to upgrade later)
- 1 TB+ bandwidth is plenty at this stage
Location
Prefer EU or US (Germany, Netherlands, or US East ideally) for reasonable latency to
most Minecraft servers, but open to suggestions.
Nice to have
- NVMe over SATA SSD
- Snapshots/backups available as an add-on
- IPv6

Going through your hard requirements first since you asked for confirmation. KVM virtualisation with your own kernel and full root, yes. You can also then use Tarsnap for backups, which is external and not owned by us.
We only have 20GB storage by default but I can increase you to 25GB once you signed up.

Dont wanna derail but could you not just use a reputable mail service? or do you just not want to take the risk, I only ask cuz your options open up a lot more if u dont need port 25/find a mail service
