@Fourplex Do you have a local DNS recursive resolver on your node? Tor exits benefit significantly from that because they do not need to use a centralized upstream nameserver like Google DNS.

If you do, I'll buy a VPS M and run an exit on it.

Unfortunately, we do not have a local DNS resolver.

However, I do recommend running a local DNS on your VPS for an exit relay. You can also forward to Hurricane Electric (74.82.42.42) if you don't want to use Google/Cloudflare.

@Fourplex said: However, I do recommend running a local DNS on your VPS for an exit relay.

The problem is that many nameservers block Tor, so I'd need a separate IPv4 for that. If you ever do want to run a resolver, all you'd need is Unbound and something like this in /etc/unbound/unbound.conf:

    server:
            outgoing-interface: <some clean IP>
            do-ip6: no
            rrset-cache-size: 256m
            msg-cache-size: 128m
            neg-cache-size: 32m
            cache-min-ttl: 300
            prefetch: yes
            prefetch-key: yes
            interface: 127.0.0.1
            interface: <the node's gateway IP>
            access-control: 127.0.0.1/32 allow
            access-control: <the node's gateway IP>/32 allow
            auto-trust-anchor-file: "/var/lib/unbound/root.key"

    auth-zone:
            name: "."
            master: f.root-servers.net
            master: k.root-servers.net
            master: l.root-servers.net
            master: j.root-servers.net
            fallback-enabled: yes
            for-downstream: no
            for-upstream: yes
            zonefile: "/var/lib/unbound/root.zone"

Does your upstream operate its own DNS resolver (just one hop from your gateway to it)?

Couldn't you run unbound and proxy/PBR its requests through a "clean" IP?

If you want to avoid adding dependencies/complexity I would understand. But I'd think it might be worth it to have control over your own resolver (and local cache)

  • forestforest Member

@tzuli said: Couldn't you run unbound and proxy/PBR its requests through a "clean" IP?

Yep, but that would require buying an extra IPv4. I do that for some services (5 of them so far). I couldn't just use a regular proxy ten hops away because the point is to reduce the amount of exposure from unencrypted requests.

I was imagining something like an encrypted VPN to some clean IP and routing DNS through that tunnel. SNAT at the clean IP

It would increase latency, but for Tor I'm guessing that the majority of requests would be cached

Obviously requires another machine but maybe you already have one

If I go that route, I could just run another resolver on one of my existing servers that does have a clean IP and set up a DoT server on it, but latency really is a problem, and surprisingly almost all lookups are cache misses due to the great variety of queries. It's pretty latency sensitive, especially when doing DNSSEC validation of a domain on the other side of the world.

Yeah I don't know why I suggested NAT instead of running another resolver. I wanted to correct myself but you were too quick ๐Ÿ˜„

Have you tested with your own resolver? Are you sure the majority are misses because of the actual uniqueness/TTL of domains rather than the cache's tuning?

I use my own resolver on 5 of my relays (they have a second, clean IPv4). I set the min TTL to 300 seconds and set the cache to 256 MiB (and the negative cache to 32 MiB, since there are lots of NXDOMAINs being returned). I also enable prefetch to renew popular lookups that are about to expire. Cache hit rate is always very low. It helps, but not a ton.

    Hi all,

Posting here because support has gone quiet on ticket #IJI-866882 โ€” only my own outgoing messages are showing, no replies from their side for a while now.

Quick summary: purchased two VPS instances less than 24 hours ago, both had a connectivity issue specific to routing from Russian residential networks (confirmed via tcpdump โ€” traffic reaches the server fine from other datacenters, including one in Moscow, but not from my home ISP). I asked them to either move one of the servers to a different subnet, or refund both since they couldn't be used for their intended purpose within the 24-hour window.

I explicitly asked them not to delete or reprovision the second server until we agreed on a resolution. It's now been closed/cancelled anyway, without a reply.

Not asking for public drama โ€” just hoping someone from Fourplex sees this and picks the ticket back up. At this point I'd take either a refund or account credit, just need someone to actually respond.

    Ticket: #IJI-866882

    Thanks.
