New Android Backup Storage Policy & Controls

Well This is stupid....

Hi Josh,

We are reaching out to notify you of an upcoming update to our storage policies, along with new controls designed to give you more control over your Android backups.

The Policy Update:
Effective in 45 days, all data included in your Android device backups will begin counting toward your Google Account storage limit. Photos and videos in Google Photos and MMS data already count toward your Google Account storage today. With this change all other backed-up data such as SMS messages, call history, device settings, and app settings will also count toward your Google Account storage. The storage used by your device backup may increase once this policy takes effect. If your Google Account exceeds its storage limit, your automatic backups will pause until you free up space or upgrade your plan.

New Controls for You:
With this change, we are also introducing granular app backup toggles in your Android backup settings. If you are on Android 9 or higher, you can now select exactly which data types and individual apps you want to back up, ensuring you only use storage for what matters most to you.

Your current storage status:
Your estimated increase in Android device backup will be 0.11 GB after this change. You've used 183.62 GB of your 2,250 GB storage.

Actual email...

I mean I got plenty of storage.. But they (Google) is really trying to make people buy storage and where the "free" tier is just not enough at all for anything...

Mods: I put this under news as its news.. but I guess its not really hosting related unless can consider doing a dedi with owncloud or something... :smirk:

They are under AI capex pressure. So they must nickle and dime everyone

  • They're nagging me for months now with constant "your account will stop working" because of I use like 13 or 14 GB out of 15. Now they annoy me more?

    Pre post addition:

I did check, they state that the change will increase my stored data by 0,05GB which totals to 14,03 GB out of 15GB.

    same here.

  • Yeah, things cost money and you have to pay for them, and we're long past the stage of capitalism where companies are offering free stuff to see who can form the monopoly. Now they have the monopoly and they're turning the screws.

where else am I going to get my 15GB worth of SPAM at?! /s

    anyways getting off topic.

I've been noticing that Immich doesn't always backup to my server as quickly as like Google Photos.

And also speaking of self hosting stuff.
    Anyone see this as well?!

    Apple joins the chat

Apple offers 5GB of free iCloud storage

  • A person I know had their account suspended for going over their storage limit for like 45 days. Had to contact support for 14 day extension to free up the storage, couldn't even buy add-ons or upgrade until suspension lifted.

the old classic 5GB free icloud storage that comes with every apple account. Very useless if i say so

Do you have any other options to backup your Android device without root? Or Apple i{Any}?

Yes, I use FolderSync on Android and it's backup my files to my storage, but it's still not a backup. A few month ago, my phone was stolen and I loose all calls history, SMS, Apps settings (watsapp history, ...) and etc. I spend a two days to install, auth, configure Apps, for daily usage. I'm not happy with that.

I believe it's a very good point for EU Parliament, to make a new law, which will obligate Google and Apple allow to backup to third party source and stop terrorizing users with that.

Use can probably go for fairphone with murena e os (https://murena.com/workspace/) preinstalled. Not tried it personally but have read few things here and there.

Crazy part is all of our contact info use to be stored on the sim card it self.
Nowadays some don't even have sims let alone the ones that do, only use it for auth to the cell network.

Probably in my case is GrapheneOS on my Pixel is better option, but I don't wanna lose tap to pay option 🥲 Only this thing stop me to leave Google Android. =(
