I was planning to try them a year back, they had a promotion article on TOI or some other news site I dont remember. But I went to mxroute that time.
I see. Please try them out once. It is a solid setup and now the parent company owns/runs a DC or two in India. It is not a lame reseller kind of thing, it is truly administered and hosted by the company with a set of relays world-wide.
Quick recap of the drama:
When I found out Mxroute owner posted retaliatory trustpilot reviews against his ex-customers, I criticized him for that and other bad behavior. He got upset and tried to launch an attack sale against myself and another criticizer and quickly found that is not allowed (and to his credit, has since donated the proceeds to charity and so I'm no longer upset about this part.) He then tried to hunt down where I worked and get me fired. Not only did I not get fired, but it seems he may have gotten some legal threats back from them
He ended up taking down the retaliatory review of me either due to the story going viral or due to the legal threats from the (alleged) employer or due to trustpilot intervention. But it seems he is still leaving retaliatory reviews of some ex-customers on trustpilot as recent as June 5th so it doesn't seem he's learned his lesson. (I probably would not have bothered to post this if I hadn't seen that)
Anyway, for someone who hosts something as critical as e-mail, you should consider if you really want to trust your e-mail with someone who acts as wild as that. Some of the people here will defend him to the ends of the earth no matter what he does (and some happen to also be his resellers...)
Way to undersell it. "I criticized him". Women who were cheated on are less vitriolic.
I mean, that is what happened at the beginning. It definitely escalated with the whole attack sale + abuse report to shut down the sale, but the initial criticism that sparked this whole thing was pretty typical as far as LET is concerned.
No need to rehash old drama too deeply now though, especially as all parties have more-or-less moved on.
I can tell....
Yeah it was a shit-show. But at least a lot of people got a cheap promo deal out of it.
I initially grabbed it but cancelled it the moment I saw the thread and realised promo title was actually a target. I was initially of the impression that it was just a sarcasm !!
It fascinates me that anybody would be comfortable with this
In my opinion the vulnerabilities they've had (and his reactions to those) are even worse. So I guess most customers just don't care / are unaware
What vulnerabilities? I wasn't aware of that (or any bad reactions to vulnerabilities).
Mxroute/Namecrane.
i didn't cancel but i did move all my domains to another host. i haven't decided if i'll renew when the time comes yet, it's cheap enough that i may keep it just in case much like i still have free google and zoho setups sitting unused.
service has always been a+ but i've always been itchy about the attitudes involved and this incident kind of pushed me to move on. how you feel about those attitudes are gonna be a personal thing. i'm not protesting anything but i prefer my commercial associations to be quiet and boring.
One thing that stood out to me:
tl;dr a hosting provider here was accused of BGP hijacking one of their upstreams, so jar decided to block all email to and from said hosting provider so no mxroute customer could communicate with them anymore and that "hopefully it causes them problems" and that it was "retaliation for being a shitty network operator". The incident had nothing to do with mxroute.
I don't like the idea that an email provider gets to determine whether I get to communicate with companies based on whether or not the owner of the provider thinks said company is "shitty" or not.
