I used their earlier their service way way back when they opened datacenter in St. Louis, MO.
I used freebsd and Plesk. They got hit with big telecom problem and got bad review. They did not answer support tickets for weeks. A year after that they were doing a lot better and offer better price.

  • In my opinion they are only using AMD because it is ALOT cheaper.

I signed up for one of those dedicated systems (US based) a few days ago. They seem to have accidentally put me on a node with 24GB of RAM instead of 16GB (the cheapest one). Network performance seems very good - I can consistently get 100mb/s. I am helping out with a project at Archive Team now and it's been running really well.

I signed up yesterday for an EU one as well (Germany) but I don't think they'll meet the 24 hour turn around on this since it's Easter. Either way if anyone wants any tests/info about it let me know. For ~50 euro a month 8 cores, 24GB RAM, 2TB and unmetered data is pretty good in my books!

How's the disk I/O and such. You should try this benchmark if Linux
    wget freevps.us/downloads/bench.sh -O - -o /dev/null|bash

Personal preference. I run a Minecraft server, which in my experience never ran well when I tried out a older Opteron server, and I've seen several other people see issues with performance with AMD vs Intel.

With that being said, it's still a outstanding deal.

Thanks for the link, that's fascinating.

  • Really considering buying one now.

"unfortunate" is a synonym for "cogent"

This is exactly what I'm experiencing with them as well. They add random late fees for payments that have been automatically paid as wel.. hilarious...

Maybe they also choose AMD because the CPUs are produced in the same country: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Micro_Devices#Production_and_fabrication

  • They're alright, but if you're looking to get one for hosting, you'll be sorely disappointed to know that bridged routing will be blocked.

This is to force you to go with plusserver's other, more expensive brand, etc.

Does that Opteron 3280 server use EEC RAM?

  • OliverOliver Member, Host Rep

    @NateN34, dmidecode says no:

    [root@eagle ~]# dmidecode --type memory|grep -i "error"
        Error Correction Type: None

  • ^^^^^^ uses Opteron-powered servers

It appears that the 3200-series was developed to be put into desktop motherboards... interesting combo there: http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2012/2012032001_AMD_releases_Opteron_3200_series_processors.html

Yes but the first sentence of that page has the word "cloud" in it!!! Doesn't that mean everything will be perfect for everyone? Isn't that what the cloud is all about?

    ;-)
