Storage Box -- or Seedbox; What do you look for?

  • i fiddled with duplicacy a bit, that does client side encryption with rsa keys afaik

    looking for a vps for seedbox use, plz pm me

    Storagebox is very good. I've configured BT and FTP, and I think it's just enough for my needs. I don't need to install any other applications anyway. The price is well worth the value, even though it only has 256MB of RAM.

    A storage box would contain all my personal data: photos, documents, projects, and other important files.

    Borg backup (encrypted remote backups) - is very good especially with Vorta as a cross platform desktop client - then you don't have to trust anyone with your data (which is also deduplicated)

    Just remember to backup your encryption key in something like KeepassXC)

    Borg just needs SSH available & the borg binary in the remote $PATH. The repo mounts over FUSE.

    I'll definitely second or third complete disabling of Docker and r(u)torrent. If it frees up resources I'm even fine with a toggle for OpenVPN and Wireguard, though those might not be user space. With 250MB turning off everything possible is at least preferable and maybe even critical.

    Might have already been done, made GH Issue about this so agent probably finished.

    @PulsedMedia any S3 offer ?

    I want something that can be mounted as a network drive on a modern GNU/Linux distribution. It must have open protocol access.

    All of them can do S3 ...

    For example; https://wiki.pulsedmedia.com/wiki/Backup_Proxmox_with_Pulsed_Media_Storage_Box#Method_5:_S3_backend_for_PBS

    Whatever that works persistently and natively. Which protocol do you suggest?

  • vpsamvpsam Member

    For the most part for me it's $/TB. I can deal with encryption etc myself.

    For larger boxes I think some level of shell is required (more than Hetzner) to run some utilities (e.g. dedupe) on the machine instead of over a network. That might be more of a niche thing though.

    @PulsedMedia Man I love you! But the problem with your seedbox is don't have HTTPS access support. Price almost like a KVM. And hyper all the time at RAM.

    Actually, you can using the user-accesible litehttp

    You could solve that using Cloudflare I guess. Or maybe mitigate is a better term.

    HTTPS Access support? .... What are you on about?
    They all come with LET Cert, not certain HTTP access (without HTTPS) is even supported.

    What do you mean hyper all the time at RAM?

    Do you mean your own domain and certificate for that?

    I was tinkering with it last month. And Claude made mistake by serving it over http.
    (acceptable, I didn't said shouldn't make mistake)
    So, both HTTPS and HTTP is possible

    There's some wiki articles tho;
    https://wiki.pulsedmedia.com/wiki/Custom_lighttpd_Configuration

    https://wiki.pulsedmedia.com/wiki/Web_Hosting_on_Your_Seedbox_or_Storage_Box

    Also we should release the DNS stuff soon, we are making clustering round robin, and static permalink style DNS access available. Will poiunt to specific service ID you have bought permanently, and the other mode is what round robins ALL your PMSS Services (Seedboxes + Storage Boxes). You can then trivially setup static content serving.

    ie. register a new billing profile, buy 5x Seedbox, upload the same content to ~/www/public/ on each, and point to the cluster DNS, and now you have 5 servers serving the static content :)

    mcx.fi as the technical domain, the nameserver side is already done, what is needed is PMSS side ++ documenting it all for release.

    I keep restarting the litehttp - but what I get 404 error. A black landing page. (My POV) I don't know that's faced that or Im only the unluckyest guys!

    If I do nothing. Just nothing. It's shows 30%+ using. WHY?

    Is it possible to use own domain? If there are any CNAME additions possible, please let me know.

    Public subdomain (USERNAME.serverhostname.pulsedmedia.com) — serves /public-USERNAME/ content without authentication = I tried that but I din;t edit files for php. But just the default home page worked.

    I followed https://wiki.pulsedmedia.com/wiki/Custom_lighttpd_Configuration - I'll look at it if possible another way around.

    I followed https://wiki.pulsedmedia.com/wiki/Custom_lighttpd_Configuration - I'll look at it if possible another way around.

    **PMSS Seedbox Architecture Overview**

    Each user runs a lighttpd instance on a high port, reverse-proxied by system nginx over HTTPS at `https://HOST/public-[username]/`.

    **Critical Configuration Details:**

    1. **nginx path handling**: nginx forwards requests to lighttpd WITH the `/public-[username]/` prefix intact (does not strip it).

    2. **auth.require requirement**: All custom.d proxy blocks must include `auth.require = ()` to pass the PMSS pipeline validation, even if authentication isn't desired. Global `auth.require` in `~/.lighttpd.conf` only covers `/user-[username]/`.

    3. **lighttpd proxy configuration** (`~/.lighttpd/custom.d/[project].conf`):
       ```
       $HTTP["url"] =~ "^/[project]($|/)" {
           auth.require  = ()
           proxy.server  = ( "" => ( ( "host" => "127.0.0.1", "port" => [port] ) ) )
           proxy.header  = ( "map-urlpath" => ( "/[project]/" => "/", "/[project]" => "" ) )
       }
       ```
       The `map-urlpath` directive strips the prefix before forwarding to your service.

    @PulsedMedia we really need KB repo.

    rolling over egress traffic, lets say at least 60%, from month to month would be pretty awesome, for the real case a backup restore is needed.

    To be fair, the quoted speed for @PulsedMedia is a max port speed for your box. Then throttling can occur per: https://wiki.pulsedmedia.com/wiki/Pulsed_Media_Traffic_Limits#How_the_throttle_works

    And I suppose, in a data restore case, you can always pay for upgraded traffic for that month.

    Many/most of the plans have a bandwidth allotment for the month. Most of the storage servers sold lately are 250GB per month. I think OP is saying it would be nice to roll over some of that so if you use basically 0 most months, but need to restore your full 4TB in an emergency, you could. I don't think that is really what these things are designed for, but I think it's a fair request.

    I don't think it's possible to restore pulsedmedia seedbox data without a speed cap. Without a RAM increase, is a bandwidth upgrade - can you even feel it?

    Yeah, I get that and it would be nice to roll over some amount if not used, but my point was that 250GB per month is not a hard cutoff, it starts to throttle per the linked wiki. Otherwise, I assume most storage boxes, if being used for cheap offsite backups or expanded Seedbox storage, would have a large rollover amount.

    What do you mean by "restore seedbox data without speed cap"? Seedboxes usually have much large egress traffic allotments due to their use case.
    I know you can purchase a larger traffic allotment, this is from the panel.

    BW and BW speed are different things.

    "Unlimited" plans (100 TB fair use)

    Plans labeled "unlimited" bandwidth operate under a 100 TB fair use threshold over the rolling 30-day window. The same shape applies — 100 Mbps held to 200 TB used, ramp from 200 TB to 400 TB, 5 Mbps past 400 TB.

    Thanked by 1stupidgenius
  • @webontop said: BW and BW speed are different things.

    Yep, BW and BW speed are different. In this case of a PM Seed/Storage box the Max BW speed is determined based on the amount of BW used in a rolling 30 day period.
