What can do on DirectAdmin shared hosting?

bustersgbustersg Member

I got this DA 14Gb shared hosting plan with jailed ssh under $4/yr.
Problem is Installatron is no longer working and provider replied still finding solution but it been like 2 months and the hosting plan is scheduled for renewal in 5 days.

So what can i do on this shared hosting if i already lost the convenience of click and install app on the fly? I meant the main objective of getting shared hosting is lazy install/delete opensource apps. I'm thinking of using as backup site2, misc cron job task or I can still install app manually via SFTP? but again, if everything have to be done manually including database create, will it better if I cancel this and go get a $10/yr KVM?

    Honestly you kind of answered your own question. 2 months broken with no ETA means you can't count on this plan for what you actually bought it for.

    That said, before cancelling, a couple things worth checking first.
    Manual install really isn't that bad most of the time. DA usually still gives you a database wizard and phpMyAdmin even without Installatron, so it's just: make DB in panel, upload files via SFTP, edit the config, done. For WordPress or anything simple that's like 10 minutes. It only gets annoying with apps that need composer, npm builds, multi-step installers, that kind of thing. Worth checking what your jailed SSH actually lets you run, since some jailed setups still allow wp-cli or git and you can basically script your own install process anyway.

    For what you said you'd use it for (backup site, cron jobs) you honestly don't need Installatron at all. $4/yr is dirt cheap for that and it's not really a downgrade for those purposes.

    The KVM question is separate IMO. If you're fine managing your own stack, updates, backups etc, a $10/yr KVM gives you a lot more freedom and you could set up your own quick-install scripts. But that's real sysadmin work, not really a replacement for "click button, get app."

    Since you already paid and renewal is in 5 days, I'd just email support and ask for a partial refund or credit since the feature's been down 2 months. Worst they say is no. If they don't budge, keep it as your cheap backup/cron box since it's basically nothing, and grab the KVM separately if you want the tinkering itch scratched.

  • Does Installatron still exist? We used it 20 years ago. Softaculous is a better option.

    oh is it the bf reseller deal (estonian)?
    you'll have plenty of time to decide to pay for the renewal... I got emailed for like 6 months after abandoning it

  • You can idle it...

  • Idle, of course.

    OK guys, this is what I've been curious about for quite some time already:

    There's a Nginx Unit section in DirectAdmin and it offers to "Create a new Application" if you click it.

    DirectAdmin: Nginx Unit - Create a new application

    The "Type" is Python, Ruby, Perl, Java, and Node.js.

    Has anyone tried to actually use it?

    Can I run some Python script like I'd do on a VPS?

    In two years or so I never managed to get enough motivation to experiment with this.

    I've been looking for Nginx Unit support specifically, as it’s a much more flexible alternative to Passenger especially for running diverse languages and protocols.

    Most of the providers I’m currently with haven't integrated it yet. Can you name me which provider this is?

  • Sad me;

  • Whichever provider it is;

    Update: It was HostSlim from (VPSSLIM I think) , but given the discussion here on LET; I am not sure if I should buy them or not :lol: .

    The recent discussion and comments aren't very friendly to them. Dunno if only Estonia is the one that's bad or NL as well.

    How's the uptime on hostbrr? how much would you give it out of 10 performance wise?

  • @Frobsy said: uptime on hostbrr

    So far I have never had any issues with them. Have hosted few client websites there, and am using for my own as well. I'd say out of the three mentioned above; I like hostbrr the most.

    For the Singapore Node; heard that there might be some issue on DA node; so had avoided it and purchased EU ones. I am extremely happy with them.

    @Frobsy said: 10 performance wise

    Can't say for rest; but for SG CPanel and DA in EU; I'd say 8.5/10 (CP SG) and 9/10 (DA EU).

  • The ticket replies might take 10-12 hours; but it's LET; that's expected. Never had critical so dunno if this is the case only for generic tickets or for emergency ones as well.

    For me the support ticket have all been addressed within 24 hrs.

    thank for your replies.
    i actually went and install YOURLS - url shortner by manually creating subdomain > ftp upload yourls.tar > file manager extract > create mysql database > edit config.php. no lazy 1 button click but still it works. i dont even have to use ssh at all. since this is a reseller package at <$3usd/yr , i will keep it. you are right, i not need Installatron, i checked everything else DA features has to offer are still intact/working.
    oh ya... chatgpt say i cannot install uptime kuma nodejs type application - u're right on that
