What can do on DirectAdmin shared hosting?

bustersgbustersg Member

I got this DA 14Gb shared hosting plan with jailed ssh under $4/yr.
Problem is Installatron is no longer working and provider replied still finding solution but it been like 2 months and the hosting plan is scheduled for renewal in 5 days.

So what can i do on this shared hosting if i already lost the convenience of click and install app on the fly? I meant the main objective of getting shared hosting is lazy install/delete opensource apps. I'm thinking of using as backup site2, misc cron job task or I can still install app manually via SFTP? but again, if everything have to be done manually including database create, will it better if I cancel this and go get a $10/yr KVM?

Honestly you kind of answered your own question. 2 months broken with no ETA means you can't count on this plan for what you actually bought it for.

That said, before cancelling, a couple things worth checking first.
Manual install really isn't that bad most of the time. DA usually still gives you a database wizard and phpMyAdmin even without Installatron, so it's just: make DB in panel, upload files via SFTP, edit the config, done. For WordPress or anything simple that's like 10 minutes. It only gets annoying with apps that need composer, npm builds, multi-step installers, that kind of thing. Worth checking what your jailed SSH actually lets you run, since some jailed setups still allow wp-cli or git and you can basically script your own install process anyway.

For what you said you'd use it for (backup site, cron jobs) you honestly don't need Installatron at all. $4/yr is dirt cheap for that and it's not really a downgrade for those purposes.

The KVM question is separate IMO. If you're fine managing your own stack, updates, backups etc, a $10/yr KVM gives you a lot more freedom and you could set up your own quick-install scripts. But that's real sysadmin work, not really a replacement for "click button, get app."

Since you already paid and renewal is in 5 days, I'd just email support and ask for a partial refund or credit since the feature's been down 2 months. Worst they say is no. If they don't budge, keep it as your cheap backup/cron box since it's basically nothing, and grab the KVM separately if you want the tinkering itch scratched.
