Storage Box -- or Seedbox; What do you look for?
in General
Storage Boxes and Seedboxes
What is the number one thing you look for on either of these?
Is it specific software support? redundancy?
What is THE storage box you'd like to have?
on the seedboxes, what is the resource you most carefully look for?
Do you need just basic software, or more advanced (docker etc.)?

Comments
Seedbox
2-4 TB, if no parity/mirroring raid => cheaper
OS SSD/Nvme (20ish+ GB)
decent CPU, being able to transcode 1 1080p stream (personal jellyfin usage basically)
4GB+ ram
Own ISO or debian possible
EU location
Calin and Hostslick offered this (max specs) for ~50-60€/y, with raid
Mostly CPU is the major problem I'd guess
Personally i put my backups on multiple providers. I dont really care about redundancy then but of course it gets a bit more expensive this way.
Software support? As long as it had FTP im happy xD
Personally i like Hetzners Storage Boxes very much
And about seedboxes personally i only need most basic stuff, qbittorrent, transmission rutorrent or deluge. those should be at least supported. i love swizzin script install those.
on seedboxes i very much like how feralhosting has done it. very impressive setup
and seedboxes usually need hdd storage non redundant, usually not horrible on dataloss in case its not last seed x)
cpu is something to look for though, has to be fairly good at least id say 4-8c of a basic cpu like xeon e5 or xeon gold
ram i dont get usage over 2gb even lmao
bandwidth is high need. seeders usually need all they can get
zero knowledge cloud storage
For me the things to prioritize is stability and the network, fast disks, uptime, huge bandwidth and docker support will be just "plus".
tar | gpg | cat >> $(sha256) ....
Does it even exist? Apart from flashy marketing words on the website.
I guess it depends on how you define the zero part. Some E2E storage solution is certainly possible but beyond that it gets tricky. Zero knowledge of a paying client? Maybe... with crypto payments. Zero knowledge in regards to connecting IPs? Maybe... if the service sits behind TOR. Zero knowledge in regards to what gets stored where? Maybe... with some kind of fancy storage protocol.
I'm not sure if that covers all bases but in any case there's a lot of maybes and in the end it might be simpler to just insert into Freenet. Anything involving managing the data on the server side is pretty much out of the picture anyways due to the possibility of revealing information.
Probably the hosted does not know who is storing and what is stored.
Exactly!
I look purely for cost per TB of usable disk space.
I'm a big fan of the Kimsufi KS-STOR box. You get either 4x4TB or 4x6TB + a 512GB nvme for a really good price.
I think the biggest problem is the age of the hardware. It also kinda requires you to have a solid setup at home to stream certain encodings as the CPU probably can't do AV1, HEVC, etc.
Your storage box works fine, however ram is too low, also why would i need docker with 250mb ram, which docker eats it all. Also the last panel was way more better (faster) then this eating ram we have atm. (which is not working at all.. can't press buttons etc..) . Overall i was very happy with the box before website upgrade(panel)
BTW price/TB is what all looks for on storage server. On seedbox the more bw/gb storage is the way to go..
I reported that docker eating too much ram thing a few weeks ago. I think PMSS has some provisions to shut docker off for the low ram storage boxes, but from what I've seen they aren't in use or maybe just not deployed everywhere. Would be nice for docker to have on/off like qBittorrent. Honestly, I wish rtorrent had an on/off in the UI as well. Or at least put the cron in user space so I can turn it off myself. Fairly minor complaints for me though.
cost per TB of usable disk space.
Open a ticket about the panel issues. Some of the changes were pulled back, but list every single grievance you have, and with requesting my attention.
Yes, there has been a toggle for a while. But admittedly, we need an overall On/Off toggle for all of them.
16 years of legacy to carry so thins tend to move slowly.
Albeit, i just told Väinämöinen to create the GH issues. These changes might land sooner than expected then.
Docker Box
yes if the encryption is done on the clientside and not on the server side. The client code should be opensource and using open standards. So it can be audited by experts.
It is good. However, open source does not guarantee it will be truly e2e. Code may change, will you personally audit every single code change? There are various way to obfuscate things even with the open source.
Are you aware of any platform that does e2e in this way btw?
I think there are some S3 implementations that can encrypt before being sent to the cloud storage.
yes but barely/not worth it even on very old CPUs + amount of headache you get as provider.
i would rather close shop and apply for Bürgergeld then offering such deal again. Lesson learnt.
Price per TB + good network. That's it.
For seedbox i look for:
* Praying for AI bubble went bust without survivor so LET hosts could purchase it at cheap prices *
I must admit, I'm kind of surprised by this thread. As one of the largest seedbox providers, you probably should already have a better idea of what people want than a handful of anecdotal comments in a thread, because people are actively buying your stuff, so it's obviously already ticking people's boxes.
Personally, I think your massive AI experiment is a disaster from a PR point of view, even though it does seem to be helping with engagement as many others seem to be enjoying it, so maybe I'm wrong. But the way you seem almost gleeful about reporting how much money it's wasted dealing with trivial problems would definitely make me wonder (if I was a customer) whether I was paying too much for a server just to subsidise your AI experiments. Also, in the very rare circumstances I need to contact support (with most services, I contact support exactly zero times), I want to actually be speaking to a human, not just fobbed off with an AI response.
