racknerd network issue

tommyluotommyluo Member

1: I have been with racknerd from 2020 till now,but recently, very headache for the network issue of connection to China mobile, but no problem with China Telecom and China Unicom.
2: No matter Los Angeles,Seattle or Dallas, same issue.
3: I also have vps with greencloud, cloudcone, vultr, hostdare, ethernetservers, contabo and etc,all no problem
4: Racknerd insists that it is our local network issue, but why other provider has no problem but only you?

If I'm the one who will always find fault,I can not been with them for 6 years.

Try running mtr from both your home and the vps on the ones that are working well, and then on the racknerd vps, and compare them. It's probably just different routing.

Hi @tommyluo -- Thank You for allowing us to be your provider for over 6 years now, that loyalty has not gone unnoticed, and is sincerely appreciated. We're always interested in helping where we can, so please feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected] with more details, and I'd be happy to personally step in and take a closer look at whether this is something local, routing related, or otherwise.

To provide some transparency on the bigger picture, @raindog308 actually covers this quite well in a recent LowEndBox post: https://lowendbox.com/blog/multacoms-china-focused-network-appears-to-be-going-away/ -- as covered there as well as throughout several other topics on LET in the past month, we are no longer inside the Multacom facility in LA for several reasons, including the inability to support our continued growth, power constraints, long term sustainability, etc. That post by @raindog308 also explains Multacom's network changes that have taken place, which specifically impact users from your region (China). The interesting part in your case is that those changes for Multacom users impacted China Telecom and China Unicom users, as BGP.net was removed from the blend -- whereas China Mobile routing has remained largely unimpacted for now, which is actually great news for your particular use case. Though my point here is that provider networks will always change and evolve in this industry, it's simply the nature of it.

It's also important to note that every end user's use case is unique. Sometimes a user's target market and intended use case is different, provider's peering arrangements are different, and what works perfectly for one user's route home may not for another, etc. Anything we can do to help optimize routes, we will, though it does tend to be a case by case basis, and to be fully transparent, a lot of congestion does indeed naturally happen within China and its networks, along with China's government intervention via the GFW, which adds latency, packet loss, etc. It's simply a known reality. It's also worth mentioning that issues like this are oftentimes temporary -- they can come and go for any number of reasons, whether it be government intervention, congestion, or changes on the China network side, and it's actually quite rare that we've seen any issue become a permanent one when it comes to China.

There's no one network that is 100% perfect for China, and providers ultimately always try to introduce networks and routes that help, but even then, it has never been perfect, no matter how much is invested. Throughout my 18+ years in this industry, I've consistently seen this change and evolve -- for example, back in the day, PCCW used to be the preferred carrier for China routes to LA, and today, it's just not really ideal. It simply changes and varies so much when it comes to China connectivity, and a lot due to reasons outside of any provider's control.

The good news is that we also offer a variety of other datacenter locations to help, because as mentioned, everyone's use case and target audience is different. We also transparently share our looking glass, so users can test and see which location of ours works best for their specific needs. We understand needs change over time, and we're always here to help the best we can, for anything that is within our control. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Very sound advice, the ultimate universal first step is to simply restart the device, that is always the first thing to try.

Well to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter in a different perspective and without being condemning of one's view's and by trying to make it objectified, and by considering each and every one's valid opinion, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say.
