What else could i host for friends and family?

Hi,
I have been hosting some things for friends/family (not planning to host for randoms due to my TOS beeing abused as soon as people read it...)
Mainly Paperless with tripple daily independent backups, offline backups and i also offer google/s3 to the person's account. I basically made sure the data is redundant and not really dependent on me or on host X or Y existing. Shit can really hit the fan and data should exist.
plus paperless AI (chatgpt/local model)
also got a Windows VM for a friend for twitch streams and other things
I dont offer full VPS experience or anything for tech savvy people (unless you want only backups from me, then can offer that) but basically fully managed apps by me, i deal with backups, updated and security.
Was thinking to offer bitwarden but we all use 1password family and that's easier and more lucritive to me. Plus the person can harass 1password support instead of me.
what else could i host that makes sense for people ? google drive alternative didn't take off, was pretty expensive anyways... paperless solves a real problem here in germany.
Windows VM does not fit many due to performance (or rather, lack off)
ideas?

Immich.
it's garbage, ente-photos all the way:
https://ente.com/compare/ente-vs-immich/
was thinking about it, would need to figure out encryption, as people are paranoid (understandable!)
with paperless, people don't care about me reading documents
nudes? oh, they do
so no clue how to implement it, but yeah... app exists etc.
Pornhub clone.
will have a look, but interesting, would still somehow need to make sure i can't access the pictures
people would love it, prob worth it just for me, sadly haven't found one
or @totally_not_banned we can re-create all porn on phub if you down?
With Ente you cannot, so better from privacy perspective.
This is why it's called end-to-end encryption. The files are encrypted before they are uploaded. Each user has a set of own keys. The client app is managing it transparently.
so even with myself having full access to the VM/LXC, i can't access the data? then it's gucci i guess
VPN
DNS Ad Filtering (AdGuard Home)
Seedbox/Torrenting
Plex/Jellyfin
changedetection.io can be useful.
Some sort of tool like a pastebin or pomf clone.
Maybe something social like a chat or mastodon.
Nextcloud
Maybe jitsi
Some of my favorite:
ArchiveBox: self hosted web archiver
Actual: finance manager
Beszel and Uptime Kuma: server and uptime monitoring
AppFlowy: Notion alternative
Cal.com: appointment scheduling, just rug pulled the entire community❤️
StirlingPDF: doing things with PDF, might works well with Paperless.
Shlink: link shortener
Edit: forgot about My Idlers, LET's favourite 🤓.
If you actually read before you post, you will notice it's a self-hosted project, with an optional cloud service subscription.
Some kind of note taking app perhaps?
I use both Trilium and Memos and when friends saw me use them it did not take long before I had to host it for them too. Both are easily run as docker containers so it should not take more than a few minutes to set up.
It's debatable. I personally think Immich is a heavy-weight player, while Ente is just work for people need it simple.
Ente never worked for me but e2e encryption is a good thing. Immich said already that they will not implement encryption since it will break certain function. Immich is also beautiful.
Stashapp is such a project
https://github.com/stashapp/stash
And general recommendations for self-hosting for family:
SearXNG (own meta search engine) https://github.com/searxng/searxng
OpenWebUI (WebUI for multiple AI providers) https://openwebui.com/
Audiobookshelf https://github.com/advplyr/audiobookshelf
ROMM (share and play roms in browser) https://github.com/rommapp/romm
Stump (Comic server) https://github.com/stumpapp/stump
Audiobookshelf? Why no Love for Navidrome?
https://github.com/navidrome/navidrome
Nextcloud
Keeping it updated is a chore though, also without office licence then you can't edit on mobiles.
Open WebUI
You can add a free-only key from OpenRouter and turn on BYOT for users. I find its note-taking feature is extremely useful as well.
I recently ditched SearXNG for Degoog and my search experience is now infinitely better: https://github.com/degoog-org/degoog
Does anyone know if something similar to Navidrome that will allow users to upload music to the server exists? My stepson has sourcing his music covered, but I'm just waiting for the day he tells me his phone/laptop is out of space. I could find a separate solution to allow uploading for sure, but was just curious if an all in one exists.
Using the Nextcloud AiO docker solution makes keeping it updated a lot easier. I would not call it perfect, but it's a major improvement compared to some years ago.
im interested too,
perhaps something like added command each user created will also create ftp user with that username and chrooting to the music dir or something?
imo the NExtcloud AIO docker are a bit bloated
we all live in europe, so feels kinda useless
the servers are registered on me, so any DMCA requests would screw me over pretty bad
was considering this, but having lots of pirated media is also no-no tbh
"jitsi, Maybe something social like a chat or mastodon."
don't sound appealing to my friend/family since they all use whatsapp?
"nextcloud" i tried to offer but it's pretty expensive and people didn't like this
"changedetection.io can be useful. "
will consider that, but there is already waybackmachine... for free...
i think you didn't read my post, why the hell would anyone need Beszel and Uptime Kuma?
will have a look, since it probably does not need ressources could set the price really low... or throw in with other stuff
https://github.com/stashapp/stash
then i would need to download all porn, doable tho
could be useful once germany gets hit with verify your ID shit
OpenWebUI (WebUI for multiple AI providers) https://openwebui.com/
Audiobookshelf https://github.com/advplyr/audiobookshelf
ROMM (share and play roms in browser) https://github.com/rommapp/romm
Stump (Comic server) https://github.com/stumpapp/stump
people i know sold their souls to google
Audiobookshelf and Stump sadly i know people won't use it
ROMM might give it a shot tbh, but anything older than ps3 is usually not so interesting for people i know
would need to include a large pirated content to be maybe useful, here they either have spotify or apply music
Keeping it updated is a chore though, also without office licence then you can't edit on mobiles.
problem was the price, with any meaningfull storage it gets very expensive
You can add a free-only key from OpenRouter and turn on BYOT for users. I find its note-taking feature is extremely useful as well.
there are free ai? whut
i mean, that's good, thanks for this hint!
sadly they all sold their souls to google overlords
I host an Asterisk server and my family has access to it.
OpenRouter gives plenty of free models, account with no credit gets 1000 free models queries/day. Just create an account then set API key allowance to 0$.
If you put in 10$ or more it's upgraded to 100'000 free models queries/day. This credit expire in 1 year.
Most of them are lower parameters models but some are quite useful. I even give students free access to these.
thanks never knew, don't mind buring 10 bucks
we'll see if they are still free in 2 years but thats another question
had a look and considering everyone uses whatsapp here... not very useful for me sadly
Changedetection is useful for notifying you about changes. It's not just an archive of changes.
