well, they clearly didn't have a loicense for that..

  • Wait from the article:

Two people were arrested, with £700,000 taken from one of the individuals. They have both been released under investigation.

So is the 1.2 million pounds number including this 700k or is the kit seperate from this amount?

Police have warned that illegal streaming services can compromise electronic devices and expose people's personal data to criminals.

We need to trust them with this statement! They know the legal streaming service can do this so naturally, illegal ones can too!

Reduce the number of streaming services, make it affordable into one platform then people will start watching it officially again.

Well, there are hundreds of thousands of infected pirate Android TV boxes containing residential proxy frameworks and worse, installed directly from the factory.

So the statement is not entirely wrong in the sense that they pose a significant risk when placed inside a network, and this is not an edge case, but a very common occurrence.

Yeah but it has nothing to do with watching pirated streams, like those guys in the article trying to imply. I agree that when people buy those dirt cheap chinese boxes for a few bucks and plug them to their home networks is indeed a potential security risk. But from that to "criminals stealing banking information" is a huge stretch and just fear mongering.

Meanwhile, the only ones who are harvesting personal data are the "legal" streaming companies, that sometimes get pwned and then it ends up in the hands of criminals :)

It does. I am not talking about random TV boxes (which also pose a risk), but specifically pirate TV boxes which are somewhat common in Europe and configured from the factory for piracy. They very often include malware frameworks.
