Lifetime Plex Pass will increase to $750 from $249.99 Starting July 1, 2026

https://x.com/Pirat_Nation/status/2056779285512278421

TLDR:

What’s changing:

  • The price of a new Lifetime Plex Pass will increase to $749.99 USD* on July 1, 2026, at 12:01 AM UTC.

What’s not changing:

  • All current Lifetime Plex Pass holders will continue to have access to all benefits and perks associated with a Plex Pass. (Nothing will change for you.)
  • Monthly & annual subscription pricing for Plex Pass and Remote Watch Pass will remain unchanged.

"You have until 12:01 AM UTC on July 1, 2026, to get a Lifetime Plex Pass at the current price of $249.99 USD* here. If you’ve been considering it, now’s a great time to buy."

"Existing lifetime subscribers will be grandfathered in with no changes to their accounts or benefits."

  • Not worth it at all, ridiculous half of the basic features now are behind a paywall, but $750 for plex is wild, hopefully this will push even more development to jellyfin.

The only reason to use Plex nowadays is if you bought their lifetime pass years ago. Otherwise, Jellyfin is the way to go.

  • I don't know why would people use it even free. Has ads, collects data, limited library integration - can you hook it to your nzbget/rtorrent directly? Jellyfin all the way.

  • Downloading to local storage on Plex on Android is a garbage experience that makes me rant about wtf Plex QA must be thinking allowing that shit experience.

Just how many remote clicks to delete something (10+) vs other tasks used far less is one example of terrible user experience. They are not dogfooding their own product.

I need to have offspring with my name so I can pass it down to him.

This price increase is insane. I am glad when I bought it for 60 euros. They just want to get rid of lifetime pass and want you to go with monthly subscription.

lol who is still using plex?? May as well take the 250 and donate to Jellyfin

  • I recently switched to https://github.com/mjau-mjau/files.photo.gallery on my local web server and I love it, It has MP3, picture viewer and video player. I do not need any transcoding since I only have family videos, pictures and music collection. Since it is a web browser based which means it works every where including phone web browser, there is nothing to download. I converted all the video files to AV1 format and now they play nicely in a web browser.

you can always donate it to me 😁

    +1 for this.

I still like and use plex free and use kodi/plezy for remote play. Nothing beats the UI and device app support.

    Jellyfin as a backup.

Yeah got lifetime for $75 USD 10 years ago. I’m still happy with it and use it. Haven’t looked at Jellyfin for a few years, but also haven’t had a need.

$750 isn’t a price I’d entertain however. I’d also want to love it a heap more than Jellyfin to drop the current $250 on it ahead of any price rise.

Plex also was free as jelly. If you push on jelly hard enough, they eventually succumb to smell of easy money.

  • Because so many here asking "Why not jellyfin instead?" In my case it is easy to answer: My Samsung TV has a plex app, but no jellyfin app.

And yes, I would also prefer jellyfin over plex.

I got around the same time, For that price was ok to have it.

For 250$ I'd already look for alternatives, 750$ is theft....

Yeah, the Samsung TV app is why I stay with Plex too.

$750 is a ton of money, glad I got it for $89.99 years ago.

Then they'd just stop offering it. They must have new accountants that added up all those original cheap lifetimes and see them still being used over a decade later and thinking it has more value than it really does.

A Lifetime Unraid license is much cheaper for much more functionality (OS vs app). Whoever is running Plex ain't doing it efficiently.

Only, if your TV OS is Tizen 6 or newer and TV not older than 2021.

As soon as they blocked Hetzner I got a lifetime emby license. Not because I was using Hetzner, I just felt it was a sign of things to come.

Not at all surprised to see they're still pulling stunts like this.
