"Email Verification Now Required"
https://portal.incognet.io/announcements/25/Email-Verification-Now-Required.html
IMO I understand the need for this change, since an email has been needed to sign up for...as long as I'm aware Incognet has been a thing. Not being able to access your account because your email was fake just looks like bad foresight. Creating usable aliases is free and easy.
Edit: As alluded to in the announcement...how do people expect to renew their servers if they can't access their account or get emails for invoices?
I have the same, huge issue, with people either using fake emails, or Protonmail (probably 90%+ of bounces are from Proton addresses) giving TOS violation bounces or the likes. Nothing screws my SES reputation more than a huge bounce rate from Proton. I'm guessing he has a similar concern..
After spending most of my life in this industry, I’ve learned that 95% of the people who can’t remember their login, don’t preserve invoices or other important info, or give or upkeep a correct email address somehow also arrive in support already at final boss Karen mode.
No “hello,” no “can you help me,” just pure “I have made zero preparations and this is now your emergency and your fault” Psycho energy.
Fake email addresses is a strong abuse signal from my experience.
Imagine being smart enough to realize you need (or just want) a more private server option, but not smart enough to realize you need to be able to pay for it
That's the same shit everywhere. "I need this xxxxxx immediately". These type of clients thought complex task are like uber eats. That, you'd tell the chef to not use X and Y, swap the ingredients, etc and it's done. It's not.
Corporate has their own pace, and telling people to rushed the task completion ignores safety checks.
Yeah, email verification is now a thing. Hasn't really caused any issues yet but hopefully decreases some administrative burdens like decreasing bounce rates and discouraging abuse, though it only takes a minute or two to spin up a new addy.io forwarder or similar. It's not really a big deal and should make everyone's life easier.
Recently began requiring verification for PayPal users only, requiring that they use the same email address as associated with the PayPal account. Still, with this, some abusers would order a big plan then chargeback even after communicating with us via ticket, confirming the code we sent them via email to confirm PayPal ownership, etc. Not losing cases but takes time and energy to provide all this documentation, screenshots of communication, etc to PayPal. Just not things I want to do after an already long day.
In any case, we're going to remove the options for large multi-year plans and have (temporarily) removed PayPal for new orders for VPS, though existing users can still use it to pay their bills. Can still place new orders using PayPal for domains and shared hosting, those aren't attracting the assholes (yet). Unsure how long I'll keep it like this, can toggle it on/off whenever I want without impacting existing users who already use it, I believe. Not many new orders are PayPal anyway, so it doesn't really hurt the bottom line.
Probably better this way. Even outside of abuse some people are just plain stupid. There's a women who regularly manages to misspell(?) her (likely similar) email address as mine causing me to get all kinds of stupid notifications (some companies are very persistent at that and don't really seem to understand what "I'm not this person and therefore not going to come get whatever furniture she ordered to the other side of the country. Quit emailing me." means...).
I can pretty much count on it to happen at least every 1-2 years. Lately she's been sending some test mails to my account. I was kind of tempted to reply with "No, mrs. so-and-so you don't have some kind of catchall setup and all your shit ends up with me" but i thought not getting those mails would be enough to make her realize that this simply isn't her fucking email address. Well, i was wrong. A couple months later she started ordering shit again and i've also been invited to some kind of lesbian music festival by one of her friends...
Congrats on the invite!
@MannDude I'm not getting the email at all, its a custom domain with protonmail. Waited over 20 mins and still nothing.
Made sure my domain email is working and it is, so not sure why I'm not getting the email.
How can we proceed?
Edit: also cant change the MX server because the domain and dns is managed on incognet... so yeahh
I sure was tempted to accept but chances are it would have been somewhere around buttfuck nowhere yet again
Change it to non-proton?
Can't do anything until I verify the current email I'm afraid.
It just gives a logout button.
Ah yes yes my bad. So, you cannot even open a ticket. Let's hope MannDude can help.
PM me. My personal business email is hosted at Proton Mail and is what I used for testing.
LETsbians unite???
The language in the client portal keeps showing Malay. I've changed language to English in the portal settings (https://portal.incognet.io/clientarea.php?action=details), but it's not having any effects. Anyone got the same issue?
I'm not seeing that here. Are you connecting from Malaysia or using a Malaysian VPN or something?
Could be some weird auto-detection with the new update. Since I don't recall that happening last year when I was in Kuala Lumpur.
Weird. I did actually remove some language options the other day but was under the impression that things would default to English. Since when was this occuring? Did you have a non English language used before?
I also did a WHMCS migration to a new server yesterday.
One of those two things likely broke something.
Please take a look at them! My domain expires in a week, and I would love to have it be sorted out.
Appreciate you and Incognet as always. Thank you.
