    Totally understand the concern.

We introduced KYC mainly to protect IP quality — before that we had issues with abuse and blacklisting.

It’s automated and usually takes only a couple of minutes, and it helps us keep the network stable for everyone.

No one’s calling KYC a feature.

It’s just the trade off for not having spammed IP ranges and unstable service which we’ve seen enough of before.

If you prefer zero checks, there are plenty of providers out there.

Good luck with that line. That's a bad excuse for KYC. "protecting ip ranges"

Well, it's your choice to acquire a VPS from them - if you know beforehand KYC is done and you don't like it: skip this provider.

It's better to address it on front as a provider as to not mention it in my opinion...

Actually i think the idea behind this isn't too bad (sometimes dodgy neighbors are just a no-go) but then (at least for me) there are hardly any hosts around here where i would even consider sending documents or going through some external verification (actually i would hardly do this in general). In my opinion you would generally be better to secure IP reputation by only opening mail ports after a talk with support, monitoring for suspicious traffic, overall proactive abuse handling and so on.

I had a quick look over the ASNs of your locations and while i can't tell which of those IPs belong to your clients as is each and every one of them hosts blocklisted IPs. Actually the OVH locations have a whole bunch of quite big offenders (massive surprise, i know...) while the UK network seemingly loves brute forcing telnet and NFORCE seemingly hosts (among other things) a scanner/brute forcer that made it onto 9 blacklists with 1 IP alone.

I am not really all that sure how much actual value is gained by being extra protective here. Something like an OVH IP will probably never be viewed overly favorably no matter how much effort you put into keeping IPs of your clients clean. If i were to be looking for a host with a clean network i wouldn't really consider any of those locations.

Appreciate the detailed feedback — that’s a fair perspective.

You’re absolutely right that abuse handling, monitoring, and controlled port access (like mail ports) are important and we do implement those as well. KYC is not a replacement for those measures, it’s an additional layer to reduce the volume of abusive signups in the first place.

From our experience, once abuse reaches the network, even with reactive handling, it can already impact IP reputation. We prefer to reduce that risk earlier in the process.

Regarding the ASN/IP point just to clarify:

All of our NL IP ranges are our own allocations, not OVH. While some upstream networks or shared datacenter environments may have mixed reputations overall, we manage and monitor our own assigned ranges directly.

We’re aware no network is ever “perfectly clean” especially in large upstream ecosystems but the goal here is to maintain a more controlled environment over time, not rely solely on reactive abuse handling.

That said, totally understand your point different providers take different approaches, and this setup won’t be for everyone .

That is true. At least from a quick glance your subnet actually seems squeaky clean. Its just the AS that announces it (NFORCE if i am not entirely mistaken) that has a bunch of nonsense.

We’re aware no network is ever “perfectly clean” especially in large upstream ecosystems but the goal here is to maintain a more controlled environment over time, not rely solely on reactive abuse handling.

Well, at least it isn't all that common to find an AS that doesn't have at least a bit of scanning activity going on but hosters with a clean (or basically clean) AS do exists. Its pretty much always smaller to at best mid sized operations using their own AS to announce IPs though.

That said, totally understand your point different providers take different approaches, and this setup won’t be for everyone .

Absolutely. It is not like i want to dictate how you have to run your event. I am just giving my personal perspective and there is a fair chance the next guy will have an entirely different one

Fair points, and thanks for the input.

Different providers, different approaches , we’re comfortable with ours.

Let’s bring the thread back to the offer, happy to help with any specifics 👍

Hi, I found the offer here and ordered a Launch VPS 3. As of now, I'm happy with it as well as with the support team. KYC took a few minutes. The vps delivery was fast. I did a custom OS install and it went well.

Yes it sure is good to know before hand, not like lowlifes kamatera who tell you after you've entered the 16th digit of your credit card that they now need your passport.. But all things considered it's still pathetic. KYC has many implications and a lot of things to unpack and I'm not bringing it to a VPS thread but protecting IP's is still a laughable excuse. I find that people who implement them are either forced to by regulation or don't know a thing about it and use it in ill conceived ways for their own purpose. Maybe it's working for them but it sure is a bad way to do things, I guess before KYC IP ranges must have been unprotectable.

Fair points, and we understand why some users dislike KYC in general.

From our side, we’re not claiming KYC is some magical solution that instantly creates “perfect” IP reputation. Abuse prevention is obviously much broader than that and also includes monitoring, restrictions, abuse handling, and network management.

What we are saying is simply this: after implementing verification together with our other controls, we saw a noticeable reduction in abusive signups and related issues on our side. That’s the practical experience we’re basing the decision on.

And yes — we fully agree transparency matters, which is why we mention it clearly in the offer before anyone places an order.

At the end of the day, different providers operate differently, and users can choose what works best for them 👍
