Thanks, but we didn't do anything special for it this year. Swamped with a bunch of other things at the moment.

Understood! Growing the business and keeping it sustainable is 1000x more important than running flash sales. H

    Well...

That + a few other development tasks.

IncogDNS will be getting a huge upgrade soon. Current anycast system "works" but is very wonky. It's using Frantech's network and I'm splitting a single /24 between 4 different POPs as individual /26s + assigning single /32s in each POP for "anycast". It works, but the routing is a bit fucky as I believe it still relies on Path for anycast and it's only 4 POPs. I feel somewhat guilty advertising it as "anycast", I mean it is, but it's not a great setup. That'll be moved to the secondary nameserver and the primary will be a new 20+ POP anycast setup that relies on Rage4 and a bunch of Vultr VMs. I may still add another POP or two, but you get the idea here: https://fatcdn.com/data/share/let/img_CSNihcsd.png . Certainly an improvement and comparable with larger commercial options. Will likely be offering a free DoH resolver as well on the same setup, for those interested in such things.

So, that'll be a big upgrade for domain users who use the free DNS as well as those who pay for DNS but don't have a domain with us. Will still consist of multiple networks for redundancy and some DDoS protected unicast options should several things fail at once somehow. I did get some internal tooling made that monitors the existing cluster and notifies me of any sort of syncing discrepancies or health concerns, as well as sends a daily health report to the NOC with the status of all DNS servers and with some good "at a glance" details. Had an issue a month or so back where one of the providers (we've since dropped) was always going offline and noticed the syncing had stopped on it and was like a thousand records off from the rest, this prompted the tooling I described above and some better monitoring that is use-case specific.

I've also had a couple emails about being "blocked" from our site/portal... It's still a work in progress and the only plans at this time are internal use but it's a necessary evil for compliance and general riff-raff discouragement: https://fatcdn.com/data/share/let/waf.png - Tor is NOT blocked by default but many Exits still trigger it because their IPs are found on some other lists. I'm still trying to find a good balance as I don't want to block Tor Exits but I also don't want to allow access from junk networks and IPs. Will be working on getting a NA/SA/APAC mirror up soon once I'm happy with the existing setup, but it's just a sort of internal project for now and nothing I have any interest in doing for anyone else. Just having some fun learning something new and using it as a distraction from other things going on.

I think I mentioned multi-hop VPN before? Still a work in progress. I've been using this setup for a couple months now and with the new bullshit-blocking DNS setup and it's been rock solid. Maybe limited use case but the idea is to have all entry points be major networks like Hetzner, AWS, Oracle, etc to reduce likelihood of them being blocked from your locale and then exit points will just be the various IncogNET POPs of your choosing.

I've mentioned for like 6 or more months now about a TOS/AUP update and that's finally slowly shaping up. Nothing major or alarming, I think I already touched base on it in previous replies. Biggest changes will be orders paid with PayPal need to have matching PayPal email address and a potential update to the Tor Exit policy to only permit ports for general web traffic, crypto and non-email messaging which is basically what the existing policy is but I'm going to revise and make sure it's enforced. I'm still testing things out to see if I can get a reduction in the amount of automated abuse junk, but one of the relays we run can be seen here: https://metrics.torproject.org/rs.html#details/A66730E3C46BE7E66B7A1D8E2B906A91D1943C43 Other changes to the TOS/AUP is just service specific stuff where we now have services not mentioned or just general clarification where one may be confused.

And I have a like two dozen tickets flagged for me and waiting in my queue. I know, I'm slow. I'm sorry. I'm slowly cracking away at them between all the other things I'm doing. If any of it is mission critical feel free to call me out and I'll look faster, but at a glance nothing is exactly "needs to be done right this second" level of seriousness.

  • Oh, so many things in the pipeline. DNS is interesting. Good luck with goals and with the family.

    Thanks.

Aside from the family illness you're referencing, I also recently got engaged, though no date set yet. :)

I'm getting old. Time to settle down.

Hearty Congratulations are in order! All the best and here's to everything ahead.

    Cheers!

Needless to say, we need Engagement flash sales and of course followed by Wedding flash sales :p

Oh I guess we're an AlmaLinux mirror sponsor now as well: https://almalinux.mirror.sofia.incognet.io/

Waiting for GhostBSD to setup there is and package mirror also.

    Gotta help out good projects.

  • Have you considered maybe offering containerization based on FreeBSD jails? I figure you would be kind of entering unchartered territory as far as offering jail-VPS goes but that obviously comes with the bonus of having no (well, more or less - there have been offerings in the past but nothing major as far as i can tell) competition ;)

Most site I know that want to allow but block Tor and Tor user must use the hidden service, not over plaintext, if they choose to use Tor, is this not option?
