Do only companies that have affiliate programs get listed on these sites? I assume that's the big motivation for the people running these sites is to have affiliate links for every offer and make $$$ off every sign-up. Do people need to be careful about these sites recommending a host simply because it has a good affiliate program and they will make more money off of ranking certain companies high on their lists?
It can't speak to the selection criteria, but affiliate links isn't the only revenue stream for these sites. They also run ads and promoted search results.
Some make those compare sites for themself so they don't need search all the time for best deals. I tried but failed as keeping the price data up to data cost too much tweaking all the time.
It's easy to check: if HostGator and Bluehost are on the list, then it's exactly as you say; otherwise, there might be other options.
