free chicken for grabs, google cloud shell

I recently rediscovered the free tier google cloud shell.
What google enginering gave for your grabs is an ubuntu virtual machine with 2 cores and 8GB ram and 5GB of storage. the machine recycles itself after 12 hours of usage. Shell and sudo access all from within your browser. You can install software and access the net from it. No need to install much software as it has most coding utilitys available, even midnight commander i found on it.

Overall I think its a handy machine for small coding tasks and try outs of open source software and or install some of your vibe coding slob.

    fastfetch

It might be better suited for some testing and showcase usage; I ran yabs once and noticed that it doesn't support IPv6

  • can i run wireguard on this machine?

    • The default weekly free Cloud Shell quota is 50 hours.
    • Non‑interactive sessions get killed automatically after 40 minutes.

This could have been an nice free dev box but Google they went out of their way to cripple it with arbitrary limits

Tip: Don't store anything even slightly important there. They flag accounts very easily. I once had my account banned for just building a java app (I guess they considered the 100% CPU usage for 2/3 minutes malicious? got banned the next day)
And on a few other accounts I simply got banned for doing iperf3 tests to my servers.
You lose all your data stored there and you can't message the support to appeal unless you have GCLOUD support subscription.

I once had bad internet so it was a nice testing environment (till I got banned and lost my projects files :).)
