.su is from the glory communist so
Workers of the world, unite!
Russia transforming into North Korea 2.0 and the Russians love it.
you guys fucked up my edited comment
Not exactly relevant but is the .su domain still in active use today? I mean, do corporation or people decide to use it over .ru, or the TLD of their country. Is it nostalgia? Do people still use it because the website started when the SU was still around? Etc. Just curious.
Probably for other reasons that would trigger rustelekom's love for russian propaganda spreading so lets not talk about this
because we need to unite the workers of the world. Glory to proletariat.
You comment is unrelated. Many countries restrict national domains (CC) to only country resident or resticted by some terms (i.e. confirmed address, for example).
To what?
The state-mandated app “Max” that Russians have to install before they are allowed to access the internet?
You are welcome.
Your position is well known and anyone can review it in this topic https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/177624/the-russia-vs-ukraine-thread-lets-not-derail-other-threads#latest
I believe that it is not necessary to spread your criticism on all topics that mention Russia. Continue your war within the related topic.
And BTW you are just distribute fake about Max. Any russian or foreign resident have access to the internet in Russia and installation of Max is not required. When you sign contract with mobile or wire ISP you need use your passport or driver id.
oh my god not again
As of September 1, 2025, the state-backed Max messenger app is mandatory in Russia, requiring pre-installation on all new smartphones, tablets, and computers. While not technically required for existing devices, the government mandates its use for official communication, education, and age verification, effectively forcing adoption through restrictions on, or the removal of, foreign alternatives like WhatsApp and Telegram.
You can deny it all you want, but the Russian government is constantly tightening its digital control, and the required identification for domains is one of the steps.
It’s quite funny how you want everything negative about Russia hidden in the Russia vs Ukraine war thread. This isn’t about Ukraine; this is about Russia controlling Russians.
@rustelekom how many months will it take to register / renew a domain name?
With a tax stamp glued on the reams of paperwork sent to the ministry over a fax machine lent by the museum.
No serious brand or company uses .su over .ru.
Fringe and smaller operations can, when the .ru equivalent is taken, and/or where the owner is not entirely ok in the head and thinks it symbolizes something, not realizing it's just tacky and poor taste. All others will try harder to find an alternative name in .ru still, or even make something in .com etc work.
Regarding the Max messenger, right now it is easily avoidable. It is not required to access the Internet, to use state services, or to pass age verification. Although they nudge everyone to install it so actively, that it might be, at some point. Sensible people plan for a second smartphone for that.
Has this law been passed already?
There was a post that this is being discussed, but not implemented yet.
Stay in Putin's good graces and you'll be okay.
so i can't buy a .su or .ru domain for personal use without giving the Russian government my US ID?
As far as I know, a separate electronic system will be created that will allow foreigners to register domains or renew their registration. More than 70,000 domains are registered by foreigners or foreign companies, so some solution will be proposed. This system is currently under development.
The rules have already been adopted. The new conditions will come into force on September 1, 2026.
That's right. I can also say that Max currently has fewer features than Telegram, as it is a new player in the market, and not all of its features have been implemented yet. For example, WeChat has been developed for many years and is widely used by the Chinese, making it an excellent system for them. For those who want to discuss the policies of the Communist Party, there are probably other systems available, including Telegram:)
Telegram is about to be banned anyway so...
Warned you guys before who are using .su. its about to be retired.
ICANN notice been given in 2025.

Its gonna happen.
Even government agencies continue to use Telegram. This is a traditional war between those in power and the people. Russians have plenty of experience in this war.
It's basically already banned, everyone is going crazy for MTPROTO proxies...

Yes government. Not people. I'd start looking for alternatives. People in power don't like telegram.
Yes, and it's getting way way worse!
Can we renew RU and SU domains before that date?
You can renew your domain registration 2 months before it expires.
It's not a big deal that it's banned per se, there are always proxies and VPNs.
Worse is the whitelist mode that is now widely deployed on 4G, under the pretext of protection from drones -- where only a handful of large domestic services stay accessible, and not even all of them. Aka total North Korea. That's much trickier to get around, and the few loopholes currently existing can be easily crushed.
Some expect the same whitelists to come to all home ISPs as well, but I hope that's overly pessimistic for now.
