VSYS Suspends our Server

imgmoneyimgmoney Member

Hi All,

We are long time customer of @vsys_host @vsys almost more than 3 years. Since we are an image host we receive DMCA and CSAM request to our storage provider to remove the content and we keep taking down in less than 5 minutes to be in comply.

But few authorities, send request to the provider where we host our main website and now they did and @vsys_host suspends the server and not even allowing us to take the backup of many thing we have on our server.

They keep saying they have to suspend the server since the received complaint. And we said that is fine, we need backup and so we can move on.

Please let us know your suggestions to get our backup from them.

I have also DMed @vsys_host and no reply to messages even after being active here.

Thanks

If the data is that important, don't you already sync changed content every hour to another non-public server ?

  • Apart from the website content, we do have lot other content stored on the server as we are with them for 3+ years.

  • xHostsxHosts Member, Patron Provider

Any content, if its that important should be synced over to something offsite every hour, especially in a high risk content like your website is

BUT TBH, we are not high risk as we are in compliance for more than 5 years and also we receive very less report with them and I have been referred by @vsys_host after knowing what we do.

I have requested them to just provide the entire image or backup and so we can move on.

Any user generated content is high risk, and particularly images are very high risk. You should know better, given that you were running a reasonably popular image host. Since it is currently down, are there backups at all, or did you lose the content?

VSYS like many providers will be lenient as long as the ratio of what you pay versus the trouble you cause is sustainable for them. When the balance breaks, they will kick you fast, and direct contact from authorities is usually a red line.

  • We do have content backup at server level (RAID) and also data center level (2 server at 2 different locations) for contents. But I do have lot other content other than website.

You should still be doing your own backups anyway in case of disk failure etc. If/when you get a copy of your data, don't just heave a sigh of relief, use that as a learning experience and make sure you get your backup procedure set up ASAP.

  • Yes, we are planning for the move as we need to find a good provider.

I dont. Actually we are really working on many things in recent days. If someone can help us in reaching right person at VSYS it will be more helpful.

    Thanks

  • Not sure whether we should prepare a popcorn....what is ' other content' you had on the server? and do you think this dmca or whatever is was...was it valid?

  • All contents are legal and all the contents we have with them are codes and DB of our other projects.

We have also informed them to check all the content on the server and then they can provide the backup in any form.

If the content was an issue, we do have an dedicated email [email protected] to handle all. And we never receive any email from whoever reported to them.

Second we are actively working with many organisation to be in compliance with many government.

    We do

    1) have our own S3 servers which is on RAID10 which can support upto 4 SSD failures
    2) we have have 2 servers of the same in 2 different location and so even if one DC is gone still all the contents are safe

TBH we do have backups of the website content which is synced hourly. But we do have loss of few minutes may be.

    3) we are big not that big.

    Every minutes matters for us

    4) we are private only. Only registered users can use us.

Also we are free. Even though we offer free service but we would like to be top notch. But it has been difficult all these years.

So if anyone can help, let me know.

Note: still all images linked every where will work as none of the content were on the VSYS but they do not understand that they are just the script they are hosting. Only issue for now is main website is down till this issue gets resolved and we find another good provider.

If any hosting provider are ready let me know.

In compliance with what? Seemingly it hasn't even been possible to report things, the contact page was broken?

Where did you list this email? I've never seen it when I looked at your site before, the TOS just says to use the contact form.

  • We do receive abuse reports over to our emails as the contact form just had an issue. Also we do have option to report content via report button in image page.

If you already have a good backup strategy in place, why do you need VSYS to provide you a backup of the server that's been terminated?

Either your backups are good enough, in which case you don't need to keep asking them for the backup of the server, or they're not good enough which is a learning point for you.

P.S. RAID is not a backup

As I told it is not about the site backup. It is our other development work as well. I have not took them.

And we have DC level replication as well.

Also they have not terminated, they have suspended.

  • @imgmoney said: other development

What is included in this one?

  • Few side projects which is full of coding.

  • ObelousObelous Member

@imgmoney said: Also we do have option to report content via report button in image page.

    Where?

  • If you open the image page you can see report in the bottom right.

Try PrivateLayer and Novoserve for hosting providers. They are pricey but pretty solid.

If you have something setup like annas archive for your site, it will help prevent issues.
    https://annas-archive.gl/blog/how-to-run-a-shadow-library.html

Also now you know not to use the server for other dev stuff because it may get taken offline at some point.

You do not know what "fine" means if you immediately contradict it.

We stopped uploading to @imgmoney since the sale notice.
im.ge — High-traffic image hosting platform with 9M+ files, 500K+ users, 2M+ page views yearly, low costs, and major untapped monetization potential” yet we get downtimes every few months due to expired certificates.
Now it’s completely offline, 9 million files in limbo.
    The end is nigh.

    Nowadays we use Nodeimage primarily.
We also use ImagePerl by @somik ; he’s trustworthy because he paid $1500 in our story.

  • i think you should have a backup vps just in case since i have 2 vps as a frontend, and if 1 goes down, you can just replace it. Check what concept said about annas archive proxy layout

  • At one point, Although I do understand this from the hosting provider. but I also understand this from a more image hosting provider perspective as well as I use catbox.moe and I think that they colocate but if something like this were to happen with catbox.moe.

Today I saw some downtime of catbox and I genuinely wondered about all of this as I wanted to share some files.

These image providers/file hosters are sort of crucial in their own manner in my opinion and catbox iirc was a project that started out of 4chan but now I use/recommend it to many standard people because its just a great project overall (much better than imgur)

I also recommend taking a look at how anna-archive does things as others have suggested. That might be the best path moving forward and having backups, even at 30 minute intervals can be good.

Every cent spent on Backup is money well spent :-)
