LowEndTalk is painfully slow

sshboxsshbox Member

... partilcularly searching is like watching paint dry.

The forum itself is also stuck in a bit of a tar pit. Looks like a resource problem, since outside of prime EU and US hours performance becomes snappier.

Surely this is something the forum owner could remedy? It's not like it's an unpaid hobby. If they really are desperate, I'm sure some forum members would be willing to help with expertise and even donations.

  • Really fast for me here.

    donations

Hell nah, how many patron providers are there?

  • sshboxsshbox Member

Right now things aren't so bad, because most of EU and US are either sleeping or getting ready for work. For a notable difference, try it during prime time.

    Have you tried the search?

Well, yeah. I was more thinking about the software side. If the problem is a configuration / database / design problem that the owner doesn't know how to fix.

  • The search has never been working fast since forever. Even snail are faster.

Like I already said, right now it's ok. During primetime it's not.

    Vanilla's search is awful.

site:lowendtalk.com the thing I am searching for in Brave, DuckDuckGo, Google, whatever is always better... At least for public content like offer threads and stuff. Doesn't help much for the stuff hidden behind a login. :(

In fact, LET feels way faster then it was a week before.

It is fast for me too. I believe @jbiloh switched the hosting from 0.5 core with 128MB RAM, to 1 core with 256MB RAM. This is likely because many people are abandoning hosting plans due to price increase, creating more unused space available for LET inside the datacenter.

It remains to be seen if the price of provider tag will be increased by @jbiloh too.

Yes, it is used with Cloudflare's CDN and captcha.

I will take a look. I've not noticed any slowness recently myself.

Next time you see the slowness please send me a PM and I'll look in real time.

Search is slow because of how the search function in Vanilla works.

The search has always been terrible for at least as long as I've been using LET. Funny that OGF uses the same software and theirs is lightning fast, so i wouldn't be at all surprised if it wasn't just missing some indices on the DB.

Literally the first result when searching for "vanilla framework search is slow":

The search functionality in the Vanilla framework can be slow, especially with larger datasets, due to inefficient indexing methods. Using a dedicated search solution like Sphinx can significantly improve search speed and efficiency.

i think at this point 10 years later we're all used to searching LET via search engine anyway so it's kinda whatever.

edit: also where is my veteran tag

  • I just joined recently and haven’t experienced any lag so far, but now I’m a bit curious.
Does anyone know what usually causes this kind of slowdown on forums like this? Just wondering in case I run into it later.

I don't think that the forum itself is slow, sometimes sure but to be honest, a bigger aspect is the search functionality which is slow

the search always been slow and its doesnt have advance filtering maybe vanillaforums is just sucks

This beast makes the forum flying like a jet for me.

    @sshbox
Try getting one of your LowEndVP(S/N)s up and connect through it.

Everything is very fast even with those extra hops involved.

  • On a more serious note, does anyone know what specs exactly is Lowendtalk run on and on how many servers etc., I am definitely interested to know more about how its servers are run.
