longtime windows/android user > apple - multiple apple ID's ?

Adam1Adam1 Member

I'm a web dev, longtime desktop windows/android user.

I'm making the switch to Apple, so I've picked up a macbook and will soon pickup an iphone and ipad etc.

From what I understand, iphones/ipads are single user with no ability to use a second user/account, while a macbook can be multi-user.

As I'm relatively new to the Apple platform, I'm aware there count be limitations I have not thought of (I was surprised when I discovered an ipad cannot be shared, for example).

Those that dev (possibly ios apps in future) - do you run two appleID's? keeping dev account completely separate from your personal/iphone/ipad account? or does it become a bit of a headache?

  • i still remember using macs before but yeah, you can use multiple local accounts but for icloud accounts, iirc you are locked to 1 account. i plan to buy a mac mini in the future

  • One more thing I have noticed is theres a limit on no of accounts that can be created in ipad !! I had ipad pro which I gave to my sis, she created her own account, then recently my brother took it, he was unable to create a new account for him, but apple support helped him within 30mins !!

you don't even need an apple ID for a macbook, but it's good to link it for the device lock. I personally would not use any apple cloud service, as it's not very cost friendly imo and now it's gonna be run by Google AI CIA infrastructure.

that's right, im currently using it with a local account, no icloud. But I plan to dev ios apps later in the year, so i assume i'll need to use one then.

I currently only use google 'cloud', as the 15GB storage is enough to back up my servers and it works too well imo. (sans media). I then use google for gmail but i aim to move away at some point.

I dont mind switching to apple, but just like with google, i dont want vendor lock-in if i can avoid it.

anyways, im thinking more from a practical perspective - im now thinking personal apple accounts on my iphone and ipad, and completely separate account on my macbook. which isnt much different to my windows/android setup.

I wish it was easy to have 2 accounts on ipad though, as it seems stupid to have 2 ipads between us, instead of spending more on a higher end ipad pro.

You can have multiple apple IDs on a laptop, but each one needs its own account. The laptop gets tied to one of them, I can't remember how, maybe the first one, and it that's the one that's considered the owner for reinstalls etc. Apple Music also has a way of changing the account somehow, as it used to be itunes and for historical reasons I had a separate itunes account for my old ipod that long predated getting a mac.

It's actually a real mess, I also have different Apple IDs for my old work account and my own company (because I wanted the developer ID in a different account for my company rather than with my personal stuff).

I also had a different account from my old job that I refused to use my personal apple ID with, and so now I have a bunch of productivity apps purchased for me in a personally owned apple ID that I can't use because I use my mac with a different apple ID that has things I purchased in there.

It's crazy that consumer laws are so weak when it comes to purchases on platforms. Should be statutory law that purchases/licenses can be transferred between accounts freely, and probably even platforms where feasible.
