Is it worth starting a game server host in 2026?

My role has been recently made redundant (senior software engineer) so I am trying to find something to keep my brain active in the space whilst I am looking for my next job.
For the hosts, is it still tough out there in 2026? Back in 2020, I started a host but ultimately closed the business after 6 months due to rising costs of server infra (located in AU) + not being able to offer the jaw dropping costs that some other hosts have...
Now that I have a bit of a savings banked up plus I've discovered the beautiful forums we call LET, wondering if this can be a viable as a freelancer?

I'm sure it's pretty brutal! The cost of hardware is going up, up, and up!
Every game host except the big, old names races to the bottom offering servers for literally pennies. So it's the most difficult service to start offering.
Not only is game hosting very resource intensive but you also have to deal with very challenging customers. I'd skip that and find a different niche.

Why would anyone want to get into gameserver hosting unless they have some real deep pockets to do things right?
Too many skids DDoSing each other, all wanting the lowest price and crying if their ping goes up 5ms from when they measured it yesterday, and wanting sponsorships for their gameserver in return for a Discord shout-out.

Not trying to discourage you, but it's probably the most brutal market to enter. Would be less headache just opening a generic brand without a game server specific focus, just general and vanilla KVM VPS hosting.

My suggestion for you is: Differentiates the services you offer(don’t offer only game servers), and then see which services are most profitable for you and which are the most sold, after that you do the choice.

Also yes, I agree with the other people, game server hosting is really brutal, you will lose money at first or don’t earn anything, but it’s an investment and with enough clients you can start to scale and earn.
Also just because some are offering this kind of services for pennies, it doesn’t mean you have to, you can offer a normal price and let people know why the services are not that cheap, and that they are paying for quality and not a server in the basement with 300 people using the same server.

yeah, it's thought business.... the margins are low to compete with others. the large companies (established) can crush you easily and fast.

It depends on audience you want to target. I'm in India and I see gameserver "hosts" all the time , they offer servers for dirt cheap (by just buying a dedi off OVH or abusing places like GCP free trials , yeah) and selling stuff via discord (their services are very poor - performance , uptime , everything is not very good , simply due to no expertise in this field) , so you might have a lot of competition once you start (as I'm sure every local region will have these , I just get to see very few out of mine just because I'm not in those communities yet) , But I think once you prove that you have quality (which majority of them don't), people will come to you. Though It's going to be hard for you considering current hardware prices
Plus as people here said - People wanting sponsorships for shoutouts , or youtubers with 20 viewers wanting sponsorships from you , DDoS , etc will make it extra hard
They blamed it on AI but it’s truly the company going broke haha. Got my payout so happy days for me.
It's already a brutal market even before hardware costs started skyrocketing. You might find it easier to offer general VPS services, with an optional anti-DDoS add-on for customers who want to run game servers (which you can just pass on the remote anti ddos from other vendors). Focusing solely on game hosting could bring you a lot more operational challenges and headaches.
OMG my Ping went up 5ms and it caused me to lose my sponsorship from Moist Rigged Butt Plugs United!

Many games require your servers being certified by them to be able to public.
Otherwise they won't provide support and if you are also not able to,you lose customers.
