Bait & Switch? Dynadot offers a 3% Crypto discount, then demands more money after payment.

This is my first time using Dynadot. On Feb 27, I initiated a .bz domain transfer. The standard price was $18.88, but they offer a 3% discount for paying with crypto (USDC), bringing the final total to exactly $18.32.

I paid the exact amount requested by their checkout. Afterwards, the "Transfer Domains" status showed "Estimated completion by Friday, Mar 6." A bit of a wait, but nothing too crazy.

However, fast forward to today (March 9), and there is still no progress. Since it is well past the estimated completion date, I reached out to their support. To my surprise, the support agent told me my payment was "insufficient" for the $18.88 cost and demanded I pay the difference.

I told them this was ridiculous and provided screenshots showing that their own system automatically applied the 3% discount. I explained that they shouldn't halt my order and ask for more money because of a discount they actively provided.

Then came the truly absurd part. Their support agent invented a completely new branch of mathematics to justify their demand:

We received payment of 18.32 + 0.5496 (3% of the payment) = 18.87, which is less than the order cost of $18.88.

Now, my order status has been changed to "Awaiting Order Payment." It seems they genuinely have no intention of processing my domain transfer until I pay this imaginary "difference" caused by their own flawed math and billing system.

Maybe I shouldn't have bothered with the crypto discount to save a few cents and avoid this massive waste of time. But the bottom line is: this is not my fault. Dynadot shouldn't hold orders hostage, and if they don't want to honor a discount, they simply shouldn't offer it on their checkout page.

If I had to take a guess, you did not send the required amount of USDC, including the network fee in the paid amount.

The support alone costs more than $0.01 (assuming 1 minute to do the replies and wage >$0.60/h)

Actually this is not the case anyway, as the transaction shows the transaction for the correct amount of USDC.

It looks like somehow the payment gateway failed and support does not have a clue.

18.33 would be the right math. Never had problem with dyna or spaceship with crypto.

🚩 Dynadot are scammers who don't know how to use a calculator.

This is the correct way to calculate 3% of $18.88:

    $18.88 × 0.03 = $0.5664
    $18.88 − $0.5664 = $18.3136

This is the correct way if you round to two digits during calculations:

    $18.88 × 0.03 = $0.57
    $18.88 − $0.57 = $18.31

If you are a scammer who needs to milk every cent out of everyone, you round discounts down instead, but then the discount is less than 3%:

    $18.88 × 0.03 = $0.56
    $18.88 − $0.56 = $18.32

How to calculate a 3% discount if you are stupid (or a Dynadot support guy - same thing):

    $18.32 × 0.03 = $0.5496

And since Dynadot staff aren't just stupid and calculated 3% from the wrong value, they also claim there is missing money because they stole it when they rounded the discount down.

And because they refuse to deliver because of $0.01 (they stole), Dynadot are ridiculously stupid.

(Disclaimer: The explanation above is made solely to help other stupid people understand the issue.)

  • Hey guys, the issue isn't about USDC network fees. The on-chain data and my screenshots prove that Dynadot definitely received exactly $18.32.

The main problem isn't their mind-blowing math calculation either, even though it was a huge shock to see—you obviously can't calculate a discount by multiplying the post-discount price by 3%.

The root of the problem is that Dynadot is denying their own promotion, and it has caused me real, tangible trouble:

It delayed my domain transfer, and the domain is now close to expiring.

The extra time and effort wasted on communication. I've spent a lot of energy trying to explain this to them, but they still just don't get it.

My stance is clear: I really don't care about the discount. I just want the domain transfer completed as soon as possible.

Goodbye Dynadot! It was good while it lasted.

@DP Any bothering about this? Me don't see problem, but screenshot says different.

  • Update, guys: things are starting to look up.

I just got an automated email saying "transfer initiated." The status is now showing as "Processing," the order price has been corrected, and the demand for the imaginary "remaining" fee is gone.

My guess is that someone from Dynadot staff finally saw this, realized the absurdity of this entire situation, and fixed it. Still no official explanation from them, though.

You should report it as a bug.
    See: https://www.dynadot.com/account/feedback/report_bugs/view.html

Alternatively, ask their first-line support to escalate it to a human with a brain and at least seven years of primary school education.

Might be, but since it is a U.S. company and the U.S. education system lags behind in math, I added a couple of years to be safe.

Let me correct myself, it was, before they started to water down the curriculum. Even Cambridge moved it to 6th year.

Don't worry. Mathematics are slowly becoming overrated. Future generations will have AI to do all that calculation for them. We just need to develop the chip in the brain and connect that to AI using an API.
