  For hypervisors, it's definitely Debian (with Proxmox or Canonical's MicroCloud)

  For applications, websites, databases, etc.: Ubuntu

  For LXC containers: Alpine

  It is not my top choice precisely because of ProxMox , proxmox ( pve-kernel ) is not Debian, it is Debain Based, there is a difference in my eyes.

  I like Alma because of REHEL mindset, I took centos 7 to alma 8 then to alma 9 without a ton of fuss, works ( well, except the PHP upgrade, that was a fuqing mess )

  oVirt / libvirt should be an option in the future?

  Yet again, I will underline PROD VM's as those that I log into 2 per year and upgrade them mostly because of CVE.

  So my pick

  1 - Almalinux
  2 - Debian
  3 - Ubuntu

  In that order, yet again, it totally depends on the use case, for me at least. And please, let's not make this a war like Cisco VS Juniper VS Arista. ( again, not in that particular order )

  I have used Ubuntu LTS on servers since 18.04. Are there any compelling reasons for me to try Debian?

  Unironically Archlinux.

  Ubuntu is basically Windows 11: spyware and ads, barely works, old software.

  Debian - moves so slow it qualifies for disability.

  AlmaLinux - does it even support an openssl version later than 0.01? Oh right it doesn't.

  But in all seriousness:

  • Alpine if I need really lightweight OS
  • Arch if I use the server frequently enough to keep it updated
  • Else Debian

  My personal favorites are Ubuntu and Almalinux.
  Ubuntu is the most widely used, so software is usually developed on Ubuntu more than other Linux distribution.
  Almalinux has a great RHEL ecosystem and more ABI stability, so for stuff that needs to run continuously for a lot of years it’s preferable.

  I'm switching from Synology to fnOS now. It's based on Debian, which makes it really convenient for everyday use and customization.
  And I can't tell the difference between ubuntu and debian with daily usage.
