How is Contabo Singapore region uptime?

sreekanth850sreekanth850 Member
edited March 3 in Help

Is anyone here using Contabo for over a year in Singapore region? If so, how has your experience been with their uptime?
This is mainly for regional WebSocket clusters that need 6–8 GB of RAM. Uptime is my main concern. I don’t mind if CPU performance fluctuates slightly.

Iam not bothered about CPU, its mainly memory and network. and planning to use only for beta period.

SG uptime is good. It's newer node, unlike aging DE which usually has 2-3+ maintenance per year.

You're welcome. Other SG options I recommend

    • greencloud ( @NDTN ) (great uptime&value, cpu FUP @ 30%)
    • @Nube (hourly vps, egress per GB)
    • @onidel @oloke (SG storage with great value and hourly vps)

I used their Singapore servers in the past for some game servers before I moved them to my own servers there. For the price you pay (I think it's like $8 USD for 8GB RAM in Singapore) it's a great value even for occasional downtime. The main issues from my experience were random downtime (could be network or hardware, who knows, they did not communicate) and poor routing. The price is low, so it's what you need to expect. If you contact them regarding downtime they just mention they are investigating and that's it.

If you need the best uptime and you'll just need to pay more than Contabo prices. Since you said uptime is your main concern, frankly, there's better choices in Singapore even on a budget.

The budget OVH or Leaseweb VPS in Singapore are probably a better option.

But this is my personal opinion.

Thank you Mike for the elaborate feedback. Ovh is out of stock. Leaseweb is also actively considering (Downside is they are asking company documents, i can provide though).

I dont recommend contabo for production (or dev for that matter)

they steal cpu, balloons ram, limits disk, and network is unstable.

they use every trick in the book.

hosting on a RP5 is better than using a contabo VPS.

you can also buy one from @HostDZire who are a reseller of leaseweb <3

[there has been an increase in pricing but that's because leaseweb had increased prices from their side]

Saw it, they gave 100Gb, disc which is kind of waste for me. My app is mainly WebSocket sync server with ephemeral storage in memory. But i wll keep this in list. After beta i may need more nodes. Than you for the suggestion.

  • I host one of my clients that is based in Asia in Contabo (SG Location), no complaints received so far I guess they're fine for the regular users. Most of the users here are power users but regular users don't really care about steal and whatnot as long as their website is up and running and they can send and receive e-mails.

Run as far away from Contabo as possible.

I have or at least benchmarked SGP VPS from all three, Contabo, Leaseweb / @HostDZire and @onidel.
    Here's my opinion:

    • My Contabo VPS there has very good uptime (300+d). It's performance isn't bad at all since it has been upgraded to an Epyc. Connectivity wasn't great though (I'll do some fresh benchmark runs very soon).
    • The Leaseweb VPS was OK although surprisingly connectivity wasn't as great as expected.
    • The Onidel VPS is what I purchased as SGP reference VPS. It's performance is good but what I was looking for was top-class connectivity and they deliver.

Summary / advice: for "normal use" I personally would choose Leaseweb / HostDZire due to clearly best bang per buck and a generous traffic volume, and actually cheaper than Contabo, albeit with "only" 6 GB RAM vs 8 GB with Contabo.
If connectivity is your priority, as it was in my case, then IMO Onidel is the best choice (which is why I picked it as a (network) reference VPS). But it's also clearly the most expensive of the bunch.

we love developers, and we invest a lot to make sure you are always online. there's no single point of failure in our network, compute or storage, and we have excellent connectivity for customers in APAC.

feel free to shoot me or @oloke a DM if you're interested.

OK, my current benchmark run of my Contabo Singapore VPS is done. Here's the results, based on 35+ runs.

For an Epyc I find the single core results disappointing, the multi-core results make up for it though and are decent. The relevant flags are there, except for nested virtualization, which I don't care about but you might.

Europe - OK, not great but really OK.

Asia / Oceania - RU routed via Europe, meh, Iran reached (1 out of 3 targets) is surprising and good, India is relatively good (see note below), SGP about 190 Mb/s is as well, and so is Hongkong. China results are rather poor though. JP and Ozzyland both reach even recommendable level!
Note: the VPS is limited to 200 Mb/s.

    Africa - Meeh, really.

Americas - East Coast results are poor, Chicago and Phoenix are somewhat better but still meeh, West Coast in or about the low 60ies also isn't great. And South America is simply crappy.

Summary / verdict: Within Asia / Oceania what I'd call a "plain" VPS with a poor SSD. If connectivity to Europe or North-America is important to you though - and it very likely is - this VPS IMO is a bad choice.
I could compare it to a @HostDZire / Leaseweb or, even more brutal, to an @Onidel Singapore VPS but why should I make myself shed tears?

Add to that that those Contabo VPS have lost their former advantage ("cheap") to Leaseweb and the end result is "thanks, no". Only half an exception, a very generous traffic volume, but even that formerly strong argument in Contabo's favour doesn't have significant weight anymore due to Leaseweb also offering that and with better quality (connectivity) plus cheaper.

Requirement is for websocket servers, so no disc or cpu is a matter. Its purely ram based. and network is also an priority. For bet i may choose Contabo/leaseweb but production will be combined with 3 different providers. thank you for the valuable feedback.

@xms said: they steal cpu, balloons ram, limits disk, and network is unstable.

Although it won't help with the other issues, you can prevent memory ballooning since it requires guest cooperation:

    echo "blacklist virtio_balloon" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

    Thanked by 1xms
