Debian or Ubuntu
What is your preferred operating system for production on VPS/VDS?

Comments
Only Ubuntu
Alpine Linux
For prod, Almalinux, why - stable, RHEL-compatible, predictable
I just hate to do apt update && upgrade each fuqing day, also I definitely don’t want to babysit updates every day.
Test or light non crucial stuff Debian.
Multimedia wise Ubuntu, they tend to have a better / letest support for VGA drivers.
Don't they have
unattended-upgradeslike Debian sir?I usually prefer slower moving OS for 24/7/365 systems. Yet your point is also valid, but I personally have a good record with Alma ( formerly was centos )
Ubuntu is great for the desktop, but not sure why you'd prefer it over Debian for a headless server unless you really want the absolutely latest packages that haven't gone through a few months of testing yet.
For me, it's Debian all the way in production.
I was asking a genuine question since I really don't know they have it or not, but thank you for clarify
Love the service man!
Debian + https://github.com/serverspan/Linux-Auto-Update-Script
So you don't have to make a drama from running apt update daily.
i only use debian and monitor updates with patchmon and dockhand
Hey, how often you update kernel on Alma on prod service?
I mean, you tell that hate apt update, but on Alma each week I see that "new kernel is available". And I don't know should I update for ex from 5.14.0-570.58 to 5.14.0-611.20.1 or not...
almalinux
Mom Debian
default to debian, purpose might dictate something else
I vote for Debian.
On my VPS I like the purity and minimal Debian, which has been running fairly consistently and meets my needs.
On a local desktop computer, I find Fedora Workstation quite useful (this off topic lol)
If I am starting out should I use debian 12 or 13?
Just start with Debian13.
I like NixOS, declarative everything ftw! (Oh but if starting out definitely NOT)
Actually, maybe a little contrary here...
Start with debian 11 or 12, and run through the
apt dist-upgradeprocess once or twice (while you have no data of any consequence on the VPS) so you realise how easy it is. That will give you confidence to keep up-to-date going forward.I think I will start using Debian13 for a while, wait until Debian14 is released, and then upgrade.
During this time, if you are a novice, you should gradually become familiar with managing your own server.
My personal opinion is not very objective.
After all, everyone's learning path will not be exactly the same, and you will have your own experience if you stick to it.
ubuntu.
Because sometimes i actually want newer packages without pretending backports are a lifestyle.
Debian for sure
Always Debian
Debain because... Debian.
I'm confusion, Debian should be your top choice just because Proxmox
Debian
Nyarch Linux
+1 Debian
It is not my top choice precisely because of ProxMox
, proxmox ( pve-kernel ) is not Debian, it is Debain Based, there is a difference in my eyes.
If Broadcom would not have messed up vMware, we would be on vMware today. - just to underline my love for ProxMox here.
I like Alma because of REHEL mindset, I took centos 7 to alma 8 then to alma 9 without a ton of fuss, works ( well, except the PHP upgrade, that was a fuqing mess )
Yet again, I will underline PROD VM's as those that I log into 2 per year and upgrade them mostly because of CVE.
So my pick
1 - Almalinux
2 - Debian
3 - Ubuntu
In that order, yet again, it totally depends on the use case, for me at least. And please, let's not make this a war like Cisco VS Juniper VS Arista. ( again, not in that particular order
)
Gentoo, because Gentoo
