Cheapest set-it-and-forget-it storage

What is the cheapest set-it-and-forget-it storage for photographs that I will rarely need to access? Need about 250 GB of space. With a provider that's been around and won't need to think if they'll disappear in the next ten years.

Please quote pricing.

I have been searching for a while now, and couldn't find anything cheaper than iDrive personal, which gives you 500GB for $10, and storageboxes from @labze which is around $8

With iDrive, you get apps for iOS and Android, and with storageboxes you can use NextCloud.

  • JosephFJosephF Member

How does Backblaze compare to AWS and/or iDrive?

  • Almost every LET provider will be gone in 10 years, sooner for the ones who don't own their own infrastructure. Just get a storage share with Hetzner, etc.

  • Zero if those photos can be shared publicly. Can upload it to some site and have archive.org snapshot it. Internet Archive has been around for more than a couple of decades and should last for the next decade as well.

I had iDrive, but they just unilaterally changed the egress from 3x to 1x in the middle of a paid year then complained when I went over the 1x. That's total horseshit.

They've since changed it back to 3x, I think, but the whole "first year is affordable then the renewal is more than double" isn't something I appreciate either, so I dumped them.

Just wanted you to be aware of some of the potential iDrive pitfalls.

yandex disk has unlimited free picture storage, ah yeah and rclone support, ah and did I forgot to mention you can get super good deals for tons of tb.

best is that it can not get cut down, cause it has a landline connection and nothing goes through water.

otherside, they scan your pictures, but if you not shooting people, who cares. us corps doing the same and even delete your account, russians don't.

No one should be doing that. Just because US companies do does not make it right for Russians to as well.

That's a great argument for using client-side encryption!

The difference is that Hetzner will randomly kick you off due to poorly-tuned automatic abuse detection that can be triggered by any third party. So they'll exist, but not necessarily as your provider!

Not the cheapest by any measure but ... we did run this promo last year:

    https://www.rsync.net/signup/order.html?code=67610f

... which is 2TB, paid lifetime, for $480. This would, indeed, allow you to set it and forget it.

We've been doing this for 25 years ... we'll be around for you in 10.

    google/icloud is 2.99 for 200GB, onedrive/aamzon drive is 6.99 for 1TB

you did say wont disappear in 10 years. I doubt any of those would.

Telegram offers free, unlimited cloud storage, so make use of it while it lasts. TeraBox also offers free 1TB storage for life. Either way, encrypt locally before uploading.

Would this plan include the ability to receive zfs sends?

Given people are recommending the true LET 0$ ways, you can still use Google photos for unlimited storage. You just need to spoof as a Pixel device and there are many guides online showing how you can do this. If you're just cold storing pictures (oh and videos @ native quality are also supported), I guess it's worth the effort. I personally think GPhotos is going to be reliable for a long time.

No. 'zfs send' over SSH has a 5TB minimum account size.

Every other thing will work, however ... including the sexy 'rclone serve restic' recipe detailed in our latest technotes:

It's actually a pretty bad deal. Like really bad.

    https://hexabyte.se/en/cloud/object-storage/

Hexabyte cloud storage is euro 5 / tb and they support granular billing

so for 250 GB you got it for around 1.4525$ per month and they have no egress billing but they do say that it isn't designed for extremely high bandwidth limits but for most cases, its honestly fine and you get the benefit of not having to worry about egress.

Onidel S3 and BuyVM slabs both cost 4$/TB and so they can get to 1$/month but in case of buyvm you have to buy a server to attach that too but these two options are good as well.

It also depends on the convenience. If someone wants to pay yearly. Hostbrr/Dedirock deals are good. You can go ask Dedirock for a custom deal maybe too.
