I've still never used Discord because of privacy concerns, and now they're going to be requiring face ID. I wonder if this will be the start of their decline...

Under the new system, users who do not verify themselves as adults will face restrictions on accessing age-restricted servers and channels. They will also be unable to participate in Stage channels, encounter filters on graphic or sensitive content, and receive warning prompts for friend requests from unfamiliar users. Direct messages from unknown accounts will automatically be routed to a separate inbox.

I'm pretty sure for majority of the discord users, nothing will change. This is most likely targeting those who are part of discord servers related to pr0n.

I haven't sent them my ID yet iirc but this new terms update is just a forced nothing burger update since I think it started from the UK or AUS and then EU and now global I think. I already use matrix for stuff

Nope.

This stops people from speaking up at stage channels.
This also sends message requests and friend requests into a separate mailbox if teen assured.

The first problem is annoying as hell for any moderation that uses stage channels (like me!)
The second problem is if you have an appeal system that relies on the above(because you don't want their email, or you don't have a separate server for appeals)... This now fucks you up if the user is teen assured. Meaning that person who fucked up and wants to come back and not repeat the same mistakes will never likely see the appeal being accepted.

I help run a 19000 member discord server that is themed around the ATLUS games, so think Persona, SMT and Metaphor. You will be horrified to know that half the user base are minors and we have one hell of a time banning creeps and keeping the server clean of nsfw content... Our appeal system is now kinda fucked... And running stage events will be harder.

Discord just ruined our day and we are looking at alternatives such as Matrix(but Matrix is not easy for little Timmy who just wants to talk about ATLUS games).

Discord does not give server owners enough tools to protect people. Why the fuck should we give them our biometrics?
Why the fuck should we trust a company that has already been breached and leaked 70k IDs?
Why the fuck does Discord not actually engage with the server owners and figure out what's missing?

Not ultra-private, most anonymous (requires a phone number), etc., but by far the most convenient and feature-packed.

Desktop client is awesome and a native app (no Electron!).
