Looking for a pretty specific server to buy (buy - colo or RTO)

I was a little late pulling the trigger on a system like this :
https://www.ebay.com/itm/135539708920

Is there any good EU providers here who can get me such hardware? Will also need to fill it with disks. In a perfect world, a RTO deal. Also possible to buy it off you and just colo it. Will need to be shipped at a later point. (EU).

Please contact me. Doesnt have to be this exact server, but i really want 12x 3.5inch bays + 4 ssds in a 1U like this one have.

Thank you

I'd recommend avoiding the Quanta ones. The chassis is non-standard so different hardware isn't going to easily swap in, Bios and IPMI firmware is old, outdated, and different versions are not publicly available except a few here and there on reddit or servethehome. The hardware is a bit quirky with hardware and software not QVL with the original project use case and Quanta themselves won't support them even for a fee.

I've got a few of the TYAN GT86C-B5630 deployed and got creative with a SFF-8612 breakout and a pci-e m.2 board, but more recently picked up a few of the SuperMicro SSG-6019P-ACR12L. Rails for either are a bit harder to find but are available. I'm extremely partial to the supermicro chassis though.

IIRC there is a provider or two on here who have your quanta model for rent

Thank you for your input. It doesnt have to be this exact system, but i wait 12 bays in a 1U, with 4 u.2 or sata ssd ports as well.

As this will be for a very long-term storage server stacked with large disks, 1U will cut my colo cost quite alot over time.

In a perfect world, i would like 2 identical servers (for parts). I know those can be hard to get parts for.

Unless a 2U is a dealbreaker, I'd recommend getting something like a Dell R730/740 for better airflow. Have two of this quanta with 12 disks in a 1U and they are trash.

  • Any specific reason to stick to 1U for this server, other than cost?

1U server with 12 + 4 bays are not very common, and that's not without a reason.

12x3.5-inch drives consume lots of power already, let alone the CPU and the board and other stuff. Most likely you'll need 200+ W for such a server, which is only standard for 2U colo. For 1U, very likely you'll be charged for additional power which pretty much negates your cost saving purpose.

Heat dissipation will also be very poor with 12x HDD squeezed in 1U, which will definitely result in higher failure rate over time.

Once the long-term project starts, power isnt a problem for me. The space on the other hand, will be really important, hence the 1U.

I am not "locked" into such a system. Just looking for solutions at this point.

My Tyan is supposed to arrive tomorrow. Do you have any leads on a set of rails?

    Hi,

    a friendly hint:

This kind of servers have usually a depth that requires racks with 120cm depth. A "normal" rack with 90/100 cm depth will usually not fit.

I have no idea's of the dimensions of this particular model in your ebay auction. But from the picture it looks like one of those very depth servers.

So with this kind of servers, please consider checking with your future provider if the racks are big enough to handle this hardware.

Would be quiet annoying if they cant close the doors anymore of the racks ;-)

Hey @GreenIce Does location have to be EU? We can solve this for you (with Lease to Own), in Toronto if it’s of interest!
