Anyone knows an alternative with tabs and a functionality of notepad++ to save a session without saving files itself?

    https://www.sublimetext.com/download

$99 for a personal licence - good for 3 years of updates.
That is for one computer or can be used on serveral (with the same licence)?

Looks a bit pricy either way.

sublimetext is free. It offers a fully functional trial with no time limit
You can simply close the popup reminder asking you to purchase a license every time you start the editor.

Yes exactly and tbh I haven't seen the popup in years.. although I have a vague memory of a plugin that suppressed it, maybe.

  • The coder explicitly supported Taiwan (which has been deemed as a renegade region from big China), and this is partially, or maybe the sole reason notepad minus minus (to counter plus plus) was released, or invented, and consequently gathered some users.

So great a story that Windows bugs did not throw splash/popups saying sth. of Taiwan.

Minus minus is preferred by those supporting China over Taiwan?

Had a look through popular alternatives with this as a key feature, along with being native-looking, no Electron, good light theme, and no editing config files to customise

    Winner so far is CudaText

Well, it turns out I can read. LOL.

"Licenses are per user and valid for use on all supported operating systems. License keys may be used on multiple computers and operating systems, provided the license key holder is the primary user."

    That sounds fair.

Also it seems to not bother with any popups for now, even without any licence or "plugins."

    Looks pretty good too.
Will give it a try and support it if it ends up being the "daily driver."

  • stupi d hackers if you cant host gay porn with it why bother

  • Zed looks really nice, but I can't get it to restore previous session without saving all the files. Saw a merged PR recently, but somehow it doesn't work.

https://github.com/zufuliu/notepad4 seems like an actively maintained alternative.

thanks for recommand, I use a old mac machine, can't use Notepad++, try sublimetext, It some key deal strange, can't get used it, try NotepadNext, seem far poor than np++, I will try alternative sofeware, serveral requst, 1. auto open previous open file, 2. could set readonly, 3. key's response very like windows(copy /paste kind hotkey some diff not a problem)

  • I hated all the ai and login stuff in it. I did find a fork called zedless but sticking with sublime for now. It is starting to feel a bit dated though

  • Been migrated from vscode to this for 2 weeks now. Really fast compared to vscode

  • Yep. Most of vim's key bindings works ootb

  • i am f..ked. Love that editor. All auto updates should be disabled in foss software. Its a huge back door.

I use BBEdit on Mac, rudimentary, but do reopen and similar to N++

Very sad to read the developments, it's a shame the internet get corrupted by those government criminals.

  • Thanks for sharing, just uninstalled and am considering wiping the machine that had it installed. Though it does state targeted individuals, so not sure if it's my overreaction.

  • Why don't you all just use vim or neovim? Why do you need a bloated graphical editor?

thanks , I will try this, yesterday I alrady try Notepad--, has reopen recent file function , "read only open file" achive function strange, could changed , every 2, 3 minute popup "file can't save ..." dialog, poor than Np++(it simple lock file, can't do any change, I like this way) , "home", "end" goto line home, end seem be mac os's fault, if you use pc keyboard will be this, try to found other way resolve this.

I switched to Kate years ago. I thought it was just available for Linux, but it looks like its available for windows and macos, too.

I do like VSCode(VSCodium in my case) to be honest, I know it's bloated compared to vim and other POSIX editors, but I like that it can do pretty much anything while staying FOSS and reasonably user friendly. Ram consumption and stuff like that isn't a concern in my case, It does run on Electron so It's not lightweight at all.

    https://vscodium.com/ (it's a de-Microsofted fork of VSCode)

It uses https://open-vsx.org/ instead of Microsoft Marketplace for Extensions, by default, ensuring everything is FOSS (but you can still use MS Marketplace, If you would like).

Now it's my favorite with Google Pro API.

how are you using it with google pro?

  • Really glad I avoided this mess by using the Chocolatey package instead of the auto updater!

  • Gedit is also desktop multiplatform now https://gedit-text-editor.org
