Just like several years ago, when a fire broke out in Krypt's data center. One of my physical servers was in that data center. They immediately sent emails to users informing them of the incident. They also consistently apologized in support tickets and provided real-time updates on their processing progress. This was great; at least we could see that they valued their users.

Did those apologies get your data back?

If not, why haven't you learned to backup your data since then?

Yes, all the data has been recovered.

While I am sorry for your loss, may I be the first to ask where are your backups ?

Especially if you write or work on your own code.

A 128 GB USB drive is very cheap today.

Yes, I have some backups of my code locally. However, some code from several years ago wasn't backed up locally due to changing computers. This makes me angry, but it hasn't made me lose my temper; otherwise, I would have sued them directly instead of warning everyone here.

If it makes you fell better I am pissed each time I accidentally delete a file from my downloads folder, and for that I do not have any backups :D hmm, I should get a VPS from a storage provider and do some rclone for that, fellas , any deals you know of?, 7$ is the bare limit I can go for. :D :D :D

any cloudcone refugee backup deals? lol

    LOL back to you :D

Until this is not official, it would be morally wrong, at least from our point of view.

We do not have any official confirmed info on the matter.

If this info, that they ran and left customers to the dust is confirmed, then we can have one sure.

Until then, only shit-posting is the best we can do.

    Do we love "posting" :D

And yes, they were "hacked" and the data is encrypted, that is confirmed in 3 threads by now.

  • Going to leave this here in case anyone wants to follow the updates on this incident.

[ I was affected by the hack too. Lost all my data. Don't care, have multiple 2 day old backups. Thanks LET for teaching me this lesson a long time ago ]

The power of apologies. In that case, you are correct. All the affected providers should apologise immediately and the crisis will be solved.

  • I've been using this company's products since 2019. Now they say they were hacked, resulting in the loss of data from three of my websites. The key issue is that there's no way to recover it. I think I'll stop using their products after the expiration date. Fortunately, those websites don't have particularly high traffic, otherwise it would have been a huge loss. Also, I'll need to back up my data from multiple sources in the future.

  • Data/backups aside, not honouring your request for a refund of unused months is a very poor show

A VPS failure means losing all data completely. On LET, it seems like these kinds of incidents happen all the time.

Only a small amount of data was "encrypted". The majority could be recovered using photorec, assuming the provider allows their customers to at least mount a rescue ISO so that they can copy the contents over the network.

We will love to see some storage VPS offers from @host_c

  • Looks like the service is still down, as seen in the status page, the uptime is now 94.06%, according to their SLA, looks like we can ask them for the full refund, correct me if I were wrong.

Do not put all eggs in one basket, especially this basket is not called Azure, AWS or GCP, you should always store important stuff on multiple locations, i.e. code can be stored on Github with proper permission settings, binary should have backup in google drive, etc.

From my experience, my code is stored in self-hosted Gitea, and a script to backup each day, the backup goes to a web drive and another samba server, there has not been a diseaster happened to me yet.

  • Even if there's one provider that never fails (there isn't), 3-2-1 backup all the way. Hell, even 3-2-1-1-0 in cases like this. (Google it.)

I understand, it sucks. Been there. But a dumpsterfire like this is the only way you'll truly learn. We all hate the initial investment, the time it takes, the actual verifying and restoring of it all. But it sure is preferable over losing your work.

We don't create backups because it's easy or fun to do. We do it because we have to and there's no other way around it.

    True

It is not a question of if the service will ever fail, it is always a question of when.
