UK House of Lords Votes to Extend Age Verification to VPNs
in General
https://reclaimthenet.org/uk-house-of-lords-votes-to-extend-age-verification-to-vpns
I know that the law hasn't passed and it would have to go iirc into house of commons but chances of it being passed are very significant.

Theory is far away from real world. The same was with pornography in USA - they ask for ID I believe. Everything is faked, nothing really controlled / supervised.
VPN user age check also is laughable. VPN providers will just move their HQ from UK to more sane location and that's it.
Suppose a UK ciitzen uses a lowendtalk provider for wireguard. I mean technically its still a VPN
The wordings of substantial and everything are extremely vague.
I am worried that suppose one extreme might use such thing in case VPN are blocked & they just stop being "private" (I mean at this point they just become Virtual networks) then they just use such thing once which would have had no legal backing previously but now it would.
How would it impact VPS providers who have a friendly approach, say towards VPN providers or just in general as I tried to point in second para
Kinda scary & feeling paranoid a little. I am not UK citizen but if I was, I would definitely be freaking out.
So to UK citizens, thoughts?
Would anyone remotely pull their VPS providing services from UK if such law truly passes or are the VPS providers themselves freaking out.
What about the VPS providers who are UK themselves? I am sorry to say but I am worried about the absolute direction its going and no stopping of it. Things are having almost bipartisan support (like wtf??) I am worried if there might be some niche UK law which can even take control of UK VPS's themselves if not now then maybe later.
I had almost called this out 1 year ago and I mean I had dismissed this as paranoia but now its turning to reality, so to all people who feel paranoia (from within UK or outside) what are your takes on it as well?
Well you are forgetting how Online Safety act works but that would effectively try to mean that UK can enforce fines even on Non UK company
you are forgetting that imgur actually pulled out of UK and I don't think that they are UK company.
I would advocate you to read about Online Safety Act. I feel like it can enforce multi million fees & can even lock you from entering UK if you fail to comply iirc and we just don't know how much UK will enforce it, I mean considering extradition treaties.
My point is that UK will get this law soon. Then they just need to set ONE EXAMPLE harsh and everyone would shit in their pants and that would be the end of privacy atleast in UK.
The laws are fucked up but before there was no legal backing for doing such things which would be unthinkable, but now there is.
Compared to Russia and Iran, this is not a issue at all.
Well if we are comparing a democracy to Iran which has become almost an intranet and killed 20-30 THOUSAND of its own people on its streets and even removed starlink then yeah its not an issue
I don't think Russia's any good either.
And the fact that you are comparing a democracy to this kind of proves my point that democracy stands on privacy of individual.
Russia used to be a democracy too & so did Iran.
My question kind of becomes if UK can be considered democracy at this point? (Pedantically yes but it feels like an authoritarianism steps by a dual party consent instead of one and even if its democracy then for how long if both parties are hell bent on doing this & they have consent from the public for the most part or validation in name of the democratic system)
Like what I am trying to say is that instead of turning the burner full authoritarianism, they are slowly burning it.
And just as in cooking, before we would know it, we would be cooked (and dead).
You aren't gonna see Russia and Iran level blockage or authoritarianism suddenly, that would have protests (which we see) and it would have a blood bath & geopolitical impact & revolutions become more likely
But none of these happen if they slowly boil but the end result would be the same.
I wish we had gotten a thermometer to detect in this boiling water but we don't.
Legit question but would we know if we are too cooked before this thing is over
We saw something sad in Iran. If govt uses full force and blocks internet and everything. It can carry out blood baths if no videos get online & people would stop talking & all the pressure (which is why I will not stop to talk about the genocide which happened in Iran)
Are other countries looking at this and saying that I want this to happen in the country or what. if not then why are you moving towards those steps man?
The more countries which would do it, the more there would be an international backing for other countries to follow suit which is also why I am (and was) pretty vocal non supporter of the Online Safety Act.
Well, what do you think from the lobyists point of view? Why and how this law benefits someone? Because as you know, “think about children” agenda always has subplots and real intentions are hidden deep.
The same was with controversial dmca implementation in UK, when private organizationa has dedicated police help for capturing “iptv streamers”. First it was a good law to control piracy rates - but turned out to be beneficial solely to a group of business entities.

I can't believe the "we're trying to build a country-wide panopticon" place is trying to make VPNs require ID verification
The need to control is very strong with this one. Pure evil.
I feel like this benefits the people in power in curbing protests and just as I have mentioned, we all saw how inevitably country's with global fists won even from large scale protests (I must say this with so much grief I have to say) (taking the case of iran and some aspects of USA)
From what I can tell there are some serious issues in UK & i have heard people dislike both parties from what I can gather (I dont follow uK news but a betrayal by party of left tories or something?)
This seems like a perfect smokescreen's news on that tada! Whether positive or negative, people can seriously do nothing about it & it solidifies their position of power directly
But bottom line is that this fucking sucks ass for the average UK person & I am asking it from a lowend perspective.
First they came for our social media, I didn't say anything
Then they came for our vpn, I didn't say anything (we are here)
Then they came for our vps providers, I didn't say anything (By definition a connection with VPS can still be considered a virtual private network, I don't think that they have ruled it out in the law)
What are the lowend UK providers thinking right now about all of these things happening and how it might impact them too because I feel like UK's strong distance from privacy makes me a little cautious too about using lowend UK provider a little bit especially when the purpose is of privacy oriented in the first place (sad because I think that there might be some good UK providers)? and how they owuld be impacted? and just the fdiscussion from a lowend perspectgive
I know its a joke but The fact that this is "Age verification" (thus there will be minors) makes it even more crazy dystopian (atleast this pic)
And secondly we don't even know in third parties who we are sending our info to and hacking etc., its all a nightmare fwiw
Those house of lords can suck my willy wonka, just saying.
But we do know that already there have been database leaks from age verification companies showing people's photos and details about them, including those of very young children. And it will continue.
And the UK doing this will embolden other countries to do it as well, so it's not going to be isolated.
Not only does this not stop children, but it redirects children to unregulated, far more dangerous communities than TikTok.
They will, bit after that you will pay a hefty amount of money, sanity and time. They will suck anything you protrude to them. Just pay.
When the government is afraid of its population, it can be defined as freedom.
When the population is afraid of its government, it can be defined as tyranny.
ID needed to access the Internet, but not to come and stay in the country.
How many VPN providers are based in the UK and subject to UK law?
"Oi, mate, you got a loicense for that Internet?"
How many VPNs are in countries that are influenced by the UK taking the first steps? Answer: All of them.
Yet again, you must follow money trail. Who’s benefiting from such laws? Not all countries would do the same. For example Norway. People would just destroy gov body and re-elect non-broken one. Easy as that.
You are way way too optimistic, I don't think you realize how much it takes to take down a Govt.
Or they will rightly ridicule the idea. The same as many porn sites are doing. Sure, the big companies might have implemented age verification, simply because it isn't going to make any difference to the type of people happy to give their CC details over, but none of them have made it a default globally.
VPN age verification is certainly worth protesting against though, and certainly isn't actually about protecting kids.
You can't get a credit card until you are 18 in the UK. So just make VPN purchases require CCs. Age verification - done.
The problem is all the parties seem to want this nonsense.
That would be terrible, but somehow I feel the UK i s actually going to find a way to do something even worse.
All of this nonsense because the government are afraid of telling parents to supervise and discipline their children.
In every two party system, each party has ridiculous, disgusting ideas. Somehow, the only ideas they both agree on are the most ridiculous, disgusting ideas of all.
