Looking for Cheap but Reliable Managed Ruby on Rails Hosting

I’m looking for a cheap but reliable managed Ruby on Rails hosting provider to deploy a few hobby projects. Ideally something that handles deployments, scaling, and maintenance without too much DevOps overhead.

Budget is on the lower side — but reliability is important (not just the cheapest). If you’ve had good experience with any of the following or similar, please recommend:

  • Managed Rails hosting platforms
  • Providers with simple deploy workflows (Git-based, Capistrano, Docker, etc.)
  • Good uptime and support
  • Affordable pricing for small apps / hobby projects

Any suggestions or comparisons would be really appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

  • Mods, please move this to correct category. I think I mistakenly put it in a wrong section.

  • Heroku remains the best option IMO, but it's pricey.

As a valid alternative, I recommend Fly.io. It's easy enough to set up and use, and is cheaper than e.g. Heroku.

There is also DigitalOcean Appl Platform which works quite well, but Fly.io is more flexible.

  • Why do you need managed server for hobby project? Get a cheap vps and run it with Kamal.

  • I’ll also be running a few blogs on the same server. In the past, I’ve run into serious performance issues when I didn’t have enough time to properly maintain the server. I’ve tried unmanaged hosting before, but managing updates, security, and performance tuning alongside my regular work became difficult.

This is why I’m now looking for a managed hosting solution that’s reliable and low-maintenance, even if it’s not the absolute cheapest option.

No cheap solutions here. Either you do it your-self or pay someone.

  • Yeah I agree. I recommended Fly.io because it's good and it's the most affordable managed option for Rails, but it can be so much cheaper with a VPS using something like Kamal.

For my app SprintPulse I am using Kamal on a bunch of cloud instances on Hetzner Cloud behind a load balancer. It's cheap and super easy to manage. In the future, when load increases and I need autoscaling or more advanced features, I will switch to Kubernetes using my open source tool hetzner-k3s, but for now this setup with Kamal is perfect and still very cheap.
