Lost-cost bandwidth-optimized VPS in the UK

I used to have a very good server in the UK from @aluy, but due to technical issues they could not solve, they ended up migrating to NL. I'm looking for another server in the UK (but not Northern Ireland) with minimum requirements:

  • 1 vCPU
  • 1.5 GB RAM
  • 5 GB storage
  • Unmetered bw @ 100 Mbps, or at least 30 TB/month (sum)
  • $30/y paid annually or triennially

Ideally, I'd like a storage VPS like the one I had from aluy, in which case the requirements are:

  • 2 vCPUs
  • 3 GB RAM
  • 500 GB storage (HDD is fine)
  • Unmetered bw @ 100 Mbps, or at least 40 TB/month (sum)
  • $50/y paid annually or triennially

For reference, the VPS I have from aluy that was previously in the UK location has the following specs:

  • 2 vCPUs
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 1000 GB storage (hybrid SSD/HDD I think)
  • Unmetered bw @ 1 (?) Gbps fair-use
  • €40/y (≈ $46/y)

I'm flexible with specs, but I'm on a budget and don't want to go much over the stated prices. I'd also rather avoid any resellers of big players. Good connectivity to Europe and the US required. Cryptocurrency payment only.

The software I intend to install, depending on available memory and storage:

  • Tor relay (non-exit, so no abuse complaint or IP reputation issues)
  • I2P router (similar to a Tor non-exit in that there are no abuse concerns) if vCPUs >= 2, RAM >= 2 GB
  • Hyphanet (a distributed data store, previously Freenet) if vCPUs >= 2, RAM >= 3 GB, storage >= 50 GB
  • Globalping probe (latency and reachability testing)
  • Syncthing relay (device backup/synchronization relay)

It looks like their cheapest "budget VPS" is $152.86/y and their cheapest storage VPS is $136.68/y (and that's going a little under my minimum RAM requirement, it's $281.40/y to get above 3 GB RAM). That's well above my budget.

Also, as I mentioned, I'd rather avoid resellers of big players, and xHosts has the following:

Our servers are located in London, United Kingdom, and operate on the OVH Network.

This offer is still live at £3/m for 10TB: https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/213604/uk-vps-dedicated-offers-win-prize-free-upgrades/p1

Their standard 1core 1GB is £4/m with unmetered BW: https://my.xhosts.uk/cart/&step=3

Two cores 2GB is £7.50/m with unmetered BW: https://my.xhosts.uk/cart/&step=3

Still out of your budget, but nothing like your $152.86/y

What they usually offer here is solely in Maidenhead I believe, which is AS20860 - IOMART CLOUD SERVICES LIMITED

Turns out I actually looked into them and forgot. I asked them if they measured bandwidth in+out or just out, but they said in+out, so even after doubling their 10 TB/month to 20 TB/month, it would still be under the 30 minimum.

Good to know that they aren't exclusively reselling OVH, though.

I looked again and have good news (with the caveat that I do not know whether they currently have a promo)

Greenhostcloud / @NDTN (IIRC) do have a UK location and are good and usually at least cheap-ish. As I have a UK VPS from them I can confirm that it works well and reliably. I don't know though whether they offer the traffic volume you need. Maybe have a look at their offers.

@forest @jsg it may be worth talking to Greencloud sales. They fairly frequently run double Bandwidth promos in line with their usual seasonal sales, so I reckon they shouldn't have a problem offering bandwidth at a low-ish cost. Beware their FUP though - they expect you to be under 50% utilization on all resources you pay for, so factor that in your calculations/assessment of value-for-money.

Having said that, I don't have any complaints about Greencloud (been with them for 2 years in various POPs) so aside from the FUP being FUCked, they are good.

GreenCloud doesn't really like relays. Tor is explicitly forbidden

You might also try reaching out to @AllHost_Rep for a custom plan, they're pretty good.

It doesn't look like they accept cryptocurrency, at least at first glance. Although I have had some successes with asking in a ticket if it would be possible to pay directly to a wallet address.

  • Maybe try @kuroit @SolidVPS these guys
