...well, I guess people have heard about your service at least.
(98% joke but kinda 2% serious. Spammers gonna spam -.-)
I don't know why everyone, when they see something that is “free,” always thinks about commercializing it.
It's unfortunate that when these people enter a forum, they can become a burden or just take advantage of the situation without being able to help others or contribute anything.
I hope he gets what he deserves. I am saddened to hear it
Thanks @hugo_sabdo I agree and also I have been accused of having some commercial motive for providing this service.
I am doing this for the benefit of the Open Source community and we have no income source, we don't farm emails and we do not snoop. We expect our clients to be open, honest and not abusers. I am very happy to say that with our simple checks we have a very good working community.
This is of course all due to our great sponsors
I hoard ~30 TB lost media, pay for everything myself and no one pays me nothing.
I have run free uploaders/hosting services since (for legal reasons) the day I turned 18.
The only time I ever got paid was when Google AdSense had zero checks, zero demands and paid silly amounts. But never from people, users, friends, blah blah blah.
I do believe in karma though; not as a supernatural thing but simply treat others as you want to be treated and thus if you're an asshole it will bite you some day :P
Some of us are just fkn nerds, but I am just as suspicious as anyone else when it comes to these things so I of course understand the skepticism from some people.
There is no proving a negative though; the only way to prove yourself trustworthy is just that - to prove yourself trustworthy
That is the best quote I have heard this year
So how can FOSSVPS prove its trustworthiness?
I once stood up at a really big convention and called myself a nechie turd
Keep doing exactly what you're doing tbh, because you're doing great and so has everyone else involved. You've got dedicated users, admins, developers, hosters, ideas... From what I've read you already have ideas beyond the current scope of the project and given time I can very well see this expanding
@zejjnt Thank you very much for your support / comments they are genuinely appreciated.
Yes we have got a team (admin, development and support) and things are moving in the background.
Got some real Open Source development happening.
Wanted to release something special pre New Year but discovered a security 'feature' which has to be plugged. So at the moment it will be 'soon'.
As far as the future of FOSSVPS expansion, that is really up to our users and sponsors being happy and I and the team will honestly try our very best.
...hey, we all work on ValveTime
May I ask what the specific requirements for open source projects are?
@goxofy
I think I stated it fairly clearly in the first post.
Just wanted to remind everyone that uk1 server will be shutting down on the 25th of January.
Although we have been quiet recently (and so have you) things have been really moving at FOSSVPS.
FOSSVPS is associated with the development of Open Source Software and that is what we have been working on.
There are two current projects being developed the first to be released within the next few days is :-
Nginx Proxy Manager (NPM) which has been enhanced by @nstorm and integrated into our NAT service. This allows users with our NAT service to host their own websites, create their own certificates and ACLs.
NPM integration means the need for a static IPv4 address (which are in short supply) is greatly reduced.
We like NPM so much that FOSSVPS services pretty much all run through it.
I will be sending out emails (please be patient) to our NAT users, giving you your access information.
As far as the second project - this is being developed by @shayneeo but is more complex so we will tease you by saying - coming soon......
For those wanting to join FOSSVPS, please see my signature and ensure you read the requirements (we are quite strict).
Best wishes from the FOSSVPS team and special thanks to our fantastic donors.
Alexhost, Hosteroid and MSATT
I am always happy to help any provider if they want more detail.
NPM is of course giving access to 80 / 443 traffic but that does not have to be 80 / 443 on the NAT VPS. So if a NAT application running on any port uses http/s then NPM can redirect to it. e.g. Proxmox on port 8006 could be accessed by pointing a domain name to NPM and mapping domain to VPS port 8006. NPM can even handle the certificate if needed.
The modification made to NPM was to stop clients from defining the host IP they map to i.e. we lock it to their VPS only. Without this very important mod, clients could effectively create a DANGEROUS open reverse proxy. It also means no access to anything but their own IP.
Mike
Basically, this is a reverse HTTP(S) proxy that listens on a shared public IP and forwards traffic to a private (NATed) VPS IP.
Emails have been sent to clients using NAT (excluding uk1 as this will be deleted on 25th of Jan) on nodes us1, mol1 and buc1 giving details of using NPM.
There is also a web page detailing the change.
Happy for the community to help each other with any queries.
For those wanting to join FOSSVPS, please see my signature and ensure you read the requirements (we are quite strict).
@Yahome
Time has moved on and I can see you are participating in the forum. So if you would like to register (see signature), I should be able to sort out a server for you
Mike
Probably you need a good intelligent monitor system/agent to split or reschedule/throttle the pipeline with different characteristics. This might be a large work, but AI might able to speed this up.
I guess I'll give it a try, though I think I won't get it anyways since I'm still a noobie in the software development area.
@Yahome oh yee of little faith !!!
We don't have an experience requirement, people have to learn. But as long as you are planning on making things Open Source we can be flexible.
Thank you very much for your consideration. I was about to answer the questionaire, forgot about the email and now I have to wait 48 hours hehe. I'm at work maybe I'll try to connect from home remotely!
Thank you for the service. I received the migration email. I have been busy recently. I will start the migration now. In addition, I still need the server. I will submit the application according to the email requirements. Thank you again!
@makej Glad the emails are clear.
I have been busy building a new mailing system and filtering clients who are not on uk1 and have NAT then personalizing the details took a bit of work, so the emails were delayed a little longer than I hoped.
When you reapply, complete the registration form accurately and give your uk1 vmid. I will authorise the build quickly.
@msatt Hello, I got the VPS. Thank you very much! But I did an oopsie whoopsie and lost access
how may i recover it? I changed SSH port for obscurity and modified nftables, as I usually do, not taking into account I was behind a NAT hahaha
Also, can I request ports to be open to the VPS?
@Yahome DM sent
Just to let everyone know as per the emails and posts that our kindly donated Onlyservers uk1 server has been terminated.
edit typo.
In case anyone missed the post and to show off our new logo
ST-Hosting have kindly donated a fantastic server in Frankfurt (de1) which will be available for at least two years !!!!
So we now have 5 (2 US and 3 EU plus another US coming online soon) servers just waiting for Open Source developers.
If you have a good reputation (not spammy posts) on here and you are developing Open Source you are very welcome to apply (link in first post).
Mike
@msatt & team
No offense at shayneeo intended, but as it popped up a question and a suggestion: do you tolerate use/projects with or using AI?
Suggestion: Do NOT! And make that clear.
I'm a FOSSVPS user myself and can happily report that they really try hard to offer great support.
Nice service - and hopefully continuing to grow - and excellent job, msatt and team! Thank you!
Hi @jsg,
I think you are talking about the word "Gemini Generated" in my post right? In the past, that is a embedded link to a project workflow image created by Gemini, so I let the words there. But when I moved my W9 short links server from UK node to BUC node, I didn't move the data (intended) so that is why, currently it is just showing "Gemini Generated".
About using AI or AI related, I am growing with AI boom so I think my thoughts would be a bit different from you. I DO use AI and I review the codes it generated each time. Though I may inexperience and using AI may lead to some privacy related leakage. But I think that is suppose to be why my projects are open-source - to be criticized and learn from my errors.
For me AI help me get a overview of a project faster, but through errors, I learn the true experiences. That said, I may still use AI in the future. I think AI is my tool and how I used AI are my skills.
Though I do think not every AI projects should be accepted (duplicated; just a bare minimal html site,...) but I respect people who leverage AI to improve their efficiency, and I dont't hate people that using AI, just don't let your brain stop braining how tight the time is.
Happy to hear back from you @jsg.
Again thanks to FOSSVPS project sponsors, thank FOSSVPS team for maintaining this program.
Best regards,
ShayNeeo
Hi - glad you like the service and thanks for the support
(how many of them do you get
).
Not certain I understand the question (apologies), but my view on AI generated code is :-
I have been coding for years and the biggest challenge was not the coding, it was the debugging. With AI, I can put the code in and get pretty much an instant suggestion as to what is wrong.
Is that good - well it saves me a lot of time and I can still code out the problem manually instead of using AI code.
Is that bad - I am losing my skill to debug and could take the easy route and just use the AI code solution.
The point is I am old and followed best practices (or created my own). New coders are off to a flying start with AI and get a result in hours when 'real' coding could take days.
Is my code better than AI - when I started many years ago, definately not, now yes it is better. But looking at AI code I can see techniques that I never considered using. So it does 'open my eyes'.
So my tldr - use AI to learn coding but always try and do things manually if possible.
AI is producing some sloppy bloated code, but that never stopped Microsoft
so if the question was should I allow AI code development on FOSSVPS, then my answer is yes as I also see FOSSVPS as a development path for the clients as well as the code.
@shayneeo
As I said: My point wasn't that you somehow used AI. I simply noticed the word 'Gemini' and had 'AI' in my head, your post merely was the trigger.
@msatt
Sad to read that and I think you'll regret that POV because AI tends to suck up resources big time.
But whatever, your hosting, your rules.
