NIXI (National Internet Exchange of India) new eKYC for all .IN (sub)domains: domain seized!

I got this email below~ unfortunately (for me) I have one third level .IN domain and I am not Indian so my domain is seized by 🖕🏾NIXI🖕🏾: thanks Guys for legally defrauding me with your regulations!

NIXI (National Internet Exchange of India) has introduced several mandatory policy changes for all .IN, thirdlevel .IN and .Bharat domain names. These changes impact registrations, renewals, transfers-in, and contact modifications.

We will deploy the required updates across SuperSite and the Reseller Control Panel by January 27, 2026. If you use our APIs, your storefront will require additional updates.

Below is a clear summary of what is changing and what you must implement.

1. Eligibility Requirements for Registrants (New and Existing Domains)

Due to compliance and data privacy constraints, we cannot continue supporting .IN, thirdlevel .IN and .Bharat domains with non-Indian registrants.

Only Indian Registrants Allowed:

What's changing: New registrations and transfers-in can only use India as the Registrant country. This restriction also applies to contact modifications for existing domains.

What you must do:

  • Enforce validation so that only India can be selected as the Registrant country.
  • Required for: registrations, transfer-ins, and all contact edits.
  • SuperSite & Control Panel: Implemented automatically.
  • API Resellers: You must implement this validation on your storefront.

2. Restrictions on Registrant Email Addresses

What's changing: Certain email services, especially disposable or temporary email providers, cannot be used for Registrant contacts.

What you must do:

3. Restriction on VPN Usage During Registration

What's changing: NIXI requires capturing the Registrant's actual IP address at the time of registering a domain. VPNs or masked IPs are not permitted.

What you must do:

Show an alert in your registration workflow advising customers to turn off VPN.
Domains registered using masked IPs may face suspension or deletion by NIXI.
SuperSite & Control Panel: Alert will be incorporated automatically.
API Resellers: You must add this warning on your storefront.

Deadline
All changes listed above will go live on January 27, 2026. Complete your storefront/API updates before this date.

Additional Upcoming changes (by March 2026)
There are a couple of additional compliance mandates being introduced, which will be released by March 2026. These are:

Mandatory eKYC and Email Verification for Domain Operations
NIXI now requires additional verification checks for key domain operations. These include:

  • Electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) verification
  • Registrant email address verification

Both requirements will apply to the following actions:

  • Registrations
  • Renewals
  • Transfers-in
  • Registrant contact modifications
  • eKYC Verification
  • We are integrating eKYC through Digio, a government-approved digital verification provider, within OrderBox.

SuperSite & Control Panel
The eKYC workflow will be handled automatically.

API Resellers
Our backend will trigger eKYC. Required UI flows must be implemented once updated API documentation is published.

Registrant Email Verification
Registrant email verification will be enforced as part of the same operations listed above and will also be re-triggered annually.

SuperSite & Control Panel
Email verification flows will be handled automatically.

API Resellers
Email verification will be triggered by our backend. You must implement the corresponding storefront flows once documentation is shared. (Documentation will be shared by us soon)

Important
Registrants will have 15 days to complete eKYC and Email Verification. Domains not verified within this timeframe will be suspended until verification is completed.

It was announced a few months before, was it a surprise for you?

Yes, because I have been told (at that time) "not to worry Sir" because the thirdlevel .IN will be exempted...

I don't know who is scamming whom... and it's certainly a nice business: you allow to world to buy into something, then you close it off.

You have not understood the message fully and your domain has NOT been snatched...YET ..
You have got the mail from ResellerClub and not NIXI.
RC will not be offering .in registrations to foreigners THROUGH their platform .
All NIXI wants is KYC, just same as required by Hetzner and many big hosts.

If you want to keep your domain, transfer to Dyandot or some other registrars who can handle the burden of KYC, and you are safe !

Source : Some foreigner group members who hold hundreds of .IN domains.
One more thing- Nixi may still flip again when the official announcement is put regarding automatic KYC.

  • Complete kyc if you want to hold on to the domain.

  • move to diff tld's. avoid this TLD for the future

If you want privacy avoid doing any business dealings with Indian businesses.

NIXI has sent mails to registrars . Registrars have forwarded mails to Resellers . No direct communication to each registrant as of now.

Just get done with the KYC or transfer out your domain to Dynadot.

@FairShare @BlaZe why would Dynadot change anything? All Registrars have to abide by NIXI...

  • Thats what you got with cctld, they can change rules at a whimp and no one can do anything, not even icann since the namespace is 100% under the jurisdiction of the country itself. Go gtld for no headache no shenanigan.

All gTLD are under the jurisdiction of the USA, one of the most censorious countries in the world. We badly need an alternative DNS root.

At least ccTLDs are safe from the USA, but you must be careful about which country you choose.

Any company would be registered in a country and subject to that country's laws ANYWAY... so where would you locate your alternative DNS root?..

  • Looks like .in will be in worse shape. Their court basically forces payment for opt-in whois privacy. https://domainnamewire.com/2025/12/29/court-reshapes-domain-registration-in-india-adding-sweeping-new-obligations-for-registrars/

    It’s both unavailable and available.

yoursunny.in This TLD is unsupported and unavailable for registration. Choose an alternative below. That domain name is available! $17.76 USD
