Nah. In almost 2026 I draw my thumbnails with a pencil then I give it to a graphic designer to bring it to life for $100, so I can potentially attract 2-3 $7/y customers.
Have over 150 images like that. ROI is crazy already.
But what’s the value when I can just ask AI myself?
Your AI may not have my ideas. Else, I highly doubt people read our blogs for the thumbnails.
It feels like paying a monthly fee for a car i own lmao
The best reply to bot GitHub and AI is one of those images used for drawing competitions during Black Friday.
I just got the two thumbnails.
The problem was self hosted runners. Charging to use your own infra. That's what everyone was flipping about and I get why. Sure the control plane side costs but self hosting runners shouldn't be an additional cost unless it can do something absolutely crazy and insane and it isn't garbage (I have heard of GitHub runners being awful).
I have no game in this argument as I'm a selfhosted Gitlab snob with full CI/CD and the only time I touch GitHub is when I'm at work and even then I'm an administrator... I keep the devs in line
So it costs GitHub, they’re providing it for free if you share your source code but they charge for it if you don’t, but your argument is that for those that don’t wanna share their source code, GitHub should still share their resources for free?
Self hosting git isn’t hard, GitHub has no moral obligation to lose resources on private repos freeloading IMO
See what I mean by I have no game in this argument? I briefly read the title and got a small summary as I was literally boarding a plane and missed this point.
Standard GitHub-hosted or self-hosted runner usage on public repositories will remain free. GitHub Enterprise Server pricing is not impacted by this change.
I see it your way.
But right now private repos don't cost, nor do self hosted runners. If it was hosted. Sure. 100% charge. But self hosting runners? Mmmm, it's gonna need to rock my world before I spend. You also do get 2000 minutes too, that's enough for small time stuff... So if you're serious... You're probably a paying customer anyway...
Also Microsoft has money... And a fuck ton of good will for letting GitHub be itself and be what it is.
As I said, I have no game in this. I just think this was poorly communicated and 🤷♀️
I blame AI.
No sarcasm, this is real.
Theres so much gives and takes with AI.
You get something and lose something with it.
Or you just use git hook to run script when push notification to your CI and call it day
Is it really free if Microshit is using the private repos for AI training data and corporate espionage?
Wait, so what I must do in order to get charged? Wtf is build?
Good point, but if that’s enough to cover their costs (and make a profit) is their decision I believe. It’s not like it’s a monopoly, self-hosting git isn’t hard.
If their server side code is as bad as their client wide code, one of their servers is spinning in a bash while loop as long as the task is running on your machine, so you're using their server resources.
I thought their argument was that they have development costs to produce and QA the software running on self-hosted infrastructure.
Even though the server is yours, Gifthub charges you for using the Actions platform
Interesting, isn't it?
Let's see if it's true that $0.002 per minute seems like little, but a 20-minute pipeline is about 4 cents, but do it a hundred times a day, for just under a month, and that's already $120.
And if there are multiple replies, it skyrockets!
Now the cost is no longer marginal. In my opinion, this hits small/medium-sized projects especially.
Waiting for someone to start a LowEndGit site 🙃
I believe, community will write watcher for repo, which will pull commit, build it and comment all build results as message with links to third party selfhosted platform. And that's all. All most the same Runners will do the same work but without github relations. Artifacts could be uploaded from this wacher after success build. The problem is solved.
Is there one you have used and enjoy? My biggest pro of github was that you effectively also opt into their data backups as well which I assume is a much better setup than my own.
Come to think of it though, I actually dont know what their backup setup is and just assumed they had something "reasonable"
This sounds like a decent solution
seem some complex, but it is simple, Ms ask you pay it, you feel it's price fare, and you very like it's service, pay it, otherwise transfter you service to other place, may build it self, or find similar in other server, host it.
